View Full Version : Stud & Girdle Kit & Rear bar clearance

Folks:
A question from another buried thread. Just for my peace of mind; looks as if I should have gone with the Addco sway bars instead of the Quickor, but did get the Quickor rear installed OK with some tweaking of the poly bushing shims.
It fits OK, but because of the installed TA stud & girdle kit it only clears the bottom and back of the differential housing by 1/2" now, whereas with the stock flat diff. cover that was more like 2" at least.
I don't see how the rear bar can move to bang the diff housing or vice versa. So far it is a nice firmed up drive.
Can you folks with a stud & girdle housing and addco rear bars tell me how much clearance you have between the bar and new bulkier diff housing? Is there any situation you can think of where movement could occur that would cause them to bump each other?
As long as the rear bar is fixed to the axle mounts and can't move forward or backwards I don't see a problem, but was mostly thinking what would happen if the car bottomed out, hit a bump, etc.
Thanks as always for your expert input!
Norm

I have the Addaco rear sway bar with the TA stud & girdle on the diff. and there is no problem with clearance between the two. As for the exact amout of distance I can not tell at this time since I am at work and the car is home. Hope this helps.

Ditto to Gordon...It's tight, but it clears. 1/2" is fine, there shouldn't be any movement between the parts.

^^^what they all said^^^
The only way the sway bar can move fore/aft is if the whole rear axle moves that way...and the only way THAT will happen is when the 22 year old using her cell phone while tailgating you in her RAV-4 doesn't see your brake lights in time...

(-: Good deal. Thanks guys! What I figured, but better safe than sorry. Now to get the Addco front bar and I'll be set on the suspension mods I think.

Don't forget your Mac & Zack control arms.
That is if there are any left.

Thanks, but not knowing about those I bought the Metco control arms shortly after joining the forum last July! In fact, they were officially my "first" mods for my MM. They were a pretty easy install and a nice tight fit and firmed up the ride a bunch.
Only suspension mod I am unsure about is the watts link; while under the car installing the sway bar I got a good look at the OEM unit, and it is the same stamped POS the control arms were, although the center piece looks pretty substantial. With the new control arms and sway bars I should be OK, and am not 100% sold on the link, but then again the longer I'm here the more I learn and the more mods I find out I "need"!
Thanks,
Norm

I combined the Metco Watts link with the M & Z control arms and love the feel of the car in the turns. Yes I know there are other suspension upgrades that I can/need to do, but for now I am happy with the handling of the car.
About the M & Z control arms, I was just giving a plug to some well made mods that are sadly no longer avaible. The Medcos are an equally made control arm that I would have bought if I did not have the M & Zs.
