Try this. See what you get w/o Lidio's chip. Its not in, I pulled it for the winter. Added the JLT and K&N panel = 9 mpg. Too cold today but, I'll put it back in and see what happens. Can't possibly be any worse.:mad2:

I get around 11 mpg around town. I'm sure it has to be to my very heavy right foot.:)

What does JLT and K&N panel mean ? What exactly do you have ?JLT induction tube, K&N panel air filter in stock air box.

Is there a before and after, when did you start getting 9 mpg ? It has been my experience that when you improve the air intake capabilities, the EEC over compensates with fuel, are your tips coated with a sticky black film ?

What were getting for MPG before it got cold and how far do you drive to work? Cold weather and short trips will make for lousy gas mileage but 9 does seem low. I wonder if the temp sender for the computer is sending the right temp---it may be staying on the cold enrichment part of the fuel air map.

Geez, thats bad. Do you have a hole in your gas tank?

My piss poor mileage started when I put the K&N filter in. At 1st I blamed it on the cold weather, but cutting the mileage in half? Its been really cold here, two nights at -20 or lower, today no higher than 1 degree. Its has to be the ECU reading a really lean condition. When I put a PHP airbox on last summer, it fouled a set of plugs in 1,000 miles. Could this be an "04 thing" ???

I would say it sounds like the air fuel mixture is off.

Was off after the PHP box too most likely.

I did a computer reset after each change to the air flow. When it warms up a little, I'll put it back to stock and see where the mileage is at. A trip to Detroit this spring is planned...

When mine was running i was getting about 12 mpg @ first.then when it started getting cold and the car was running great(with lead foot) i would say i was getting about 9..
But 9 for damn near stock thats not good..

Gee, and I thought I was the only one getting bad mileage on a stock '04. I even purchased a locking gas cap from the dealer thinking local kids might be getting to the tank.

Just filed up today, stock 04 MM that gets 19-20 mpg of mostly city driving. Last month on my trip to San Antonio and back I got about 24 mpg at about 70 mph more or less. Cant complain.

Also about what I get in my '03 with 4.10 rear end and JLT intake.

When it was mostly stock (also read "for the first 500 miles"), I drove the wheels off my car. I was HEAVY on the loud-pedal and still only saw a low of 13 mpg. Now, I run it pretty hard and see 17/23. Something's wrong with your ride, bro.

I swapped a K&N panel in and NEVER saw a negative effect on my mpg. It's quite possible that the MAF was fouled due to an over-oiling issue with the filter. Did you oil the filter yourself or put it in straight from the box?

I average about 17mpg with a mix of highway and city driving. The only mod my car has is the Lidio tune.

You might have over oiled the K&N. That would screw up the Mass Air Flow sensor.

This sounds to me like an over oiled K&N filter, which deposited too much oil onto the Mass Airlflow Sensor, and causing the airflow readings to be incorrect....

Just a theory.

My stock 04 gets around 15-16 running around.....

9 MPG?!

There is something definitely wrong with your car...

We have the 4.10s and number of other mods (see garage if interested) and still get a touch over 21 MPG on the highway...I haven't really kept track of the around-town mileage, but I know it isn't THAT bad...

I've heard of K&N filters being over-oiled right out of the box, so as Wes and Pantherman said, start there, especially as you indicated the poor mileage started right after you installed the new filter.

Clean your MAF (DON'T use carburetor cleaner!!! Use electronic component cleaner, or a cleaner specifically for throttle bodies) and re-install the paper filter. If your mileage improves, then throw the K&N in the trash...(where it belongs, IMHO)

Just filled up the tank and I have the drop in K & N filter. I am guessing I have been around 15 around town so we shall see. But 9 per gallon, Way too low! Even for us lead feet!!

Well today I drove to Albany on union business. It was -6 degrees when I left. I did so so on mileage going out. Maybe 20 mpg at 75 mph on the T Way. Coming back it was from 16 to 20 degrees and the mileage was better. How much better I won't know till I fill her again. I'm now thinking the 9 mpg was a fluke due to the extreem cold air temps this past weekend. Most of my driving was done while it was -15 to -25 degrees below 0, actual air temp, not wind chill.

The K&N panel was not over oiled. I've used them for sometime now. I blot them on a paper towel when new to remove excess oil. There wasn't any on this one. I think my ECU is real touchy about changes to the air flow. I'm planning to have Lidio do a dyno tune and adjust the A/F ratio when spring arrives. I'll give the K&N another tank full and if the mileage is still low, I'll put the OEM air filter back in. Thanks for all the advice!

I have an 04 with 7k miles on it. Just came back from Norfolk averaging 79.6 mph for a two hour period, at least 10 second gear passes, and a little mixed city. 317miles and pumped in 14gallons at Exit 104 on 95. Got 22.6mpg. 9mpg sounds like your brakes are being applied... :D Check to make sure you didn't run over a Echo and are still dragging it under your car.

But seriously a dirty MAF sensor caused my old Taurus to run very rich...to the point of tip fouling.

This may be off topic, but my 1990 Town Car has dropped from 17mpg to 12mpg, just from the change in air temperature.
Dont ask me why, but it happened.

One thing to consider is that in colder weather, some folks warm up their cars before driving off, this and the inherent call for more fuel during a cold start may account for some of it. Believe or not; is a little cool down here and I lost 2 mpg on the last fill up.

My experince with K&N filters do not put in out of box,let sit exposed to air,let oil run off, blot with papertowel a few times.
