View Full Version : Valve cover color poll

I've got a set of valve covers on order to powercoat for installation when my MM goes in for a camshaft bearing cap re-torque job.
The question / poll is, what color should I have the covers powercoated?
I've been thinking of going with Ford blue, but red looks nice also. Did Mercury ever have a standard engine accent color like the Ford blue? I asked my svc mgr and he said Mercury used all kinds colors for engines and accents, including dark blue, goldenrod yellow, dark green and tangerine (orange?).
Oh yeah, thinking long term, the color would also be used on some GT side stripes on black. ;)

Why do you need to have the camshaft bearing cap re-torqued?

Cold start valve train chatter, possible valve ticking / tapping during acceleration. Claimed to be the fix by others here, so I'm killing two birds with one stone. I'll post whether this solved the noise issues or not.

I'm still looking for someone who can paint mine to look like carbon fiber.
(Anybody know a custom paint shop that can do this?)

I say red all the way. I think red and black makes for a menacing color combination it looks good on our cars.

I'm undecided with my 04. I wanted them polished and powder coated clear but the powder coat will peel after a bit (like painting gloss over gloss nothing for the pc to bite). I'm either going to have them blasted and pc clear which will pretty much match the GT coil covers or go with the ford blue to set off the coil covers

Or you can call us anytime. ;)

I like red for black cars and blue for silver cars. I want to paint mine or have them chromed. Anyone know how much to chrome our valve covers?

...The question / poll is, what color should I have the covers powercoated?
;)
I got a kit at walleyworld that's a Mystic, like they paint the Cobras. There's three spray cans of stuff in the kit, and it does a great job. There's two colors; but the one I painted my motorcycle helmet goes from gold to dark purple. If it would stay on the valve covers, I think it would look way cool.
I was gonna try it, but got "spooked" by the posts telling how ridiculously stupid it is to get the damned things off.
"First, loosen the motor mount, and jack up the engine" ...NOT!

Red's is in lead - in front of all the rest of the others combined. I thought that would be the general consensus.
Out of curiosity, I snatched a pic of red valve covers out of the gallery (hope you don't mind Todd) and "painted" the closest thing I could find to goldenrod and tangerine on top of them. See attached.
Probably the safest thing to do is to powercoat red, unless I have them painted, or they would wind up a generic yellow or orange. I'm still considering these two because of the side stripe caveat.
Comments? Yeah, I've got too much time on my hands.

Is it Marauderchic that has the bright silver (HPC) coated cam covers and cam drive cover?
That looks great!

I picked the valve covers up Friday, too late to get to the powercoaters. But after looking at them with my rose-colored glasses on I think they are just too dang purdy to powdercoat:

I'm now I'm thinking polished and cleared. IMO that would complement the polished wheels nicely.
I better get busy making up my mind to I can get 'er done already.

TAF has red, Petrograde has blue. Both look awsome.
Different strokes for different folks.
