View Full Version : When to shift.
During flyway, I mean highway cruising, at what speed do most of you shift to overdrive?

I usually put it in about about 100 or so, unless I'm weaving in and out of traffic.....
J/K....around 60/65
LOL, I was about to say "DAAAMN!" That's about when I shift, 60-65 because thats what the speed limit is. Now, if you're doing 65 with it in O/D, and decide to pass and stomp on it, is it better to leave it in O/D, or take it out? Or does it freaking matter?

If I'm going to mess around I'll take it out of O/D, much more responsive, and a lot more fun. If I'm going slower I'll do one better and slide it into 2nd, and really let it scream. But getting up to cruising speed I'll dump it into O/D at the time I would shift into 5th in a manual. I just listen to the engine.

:P I am in agreement with the rest of the crew. I usually put it into O/D at around 60 to 65, and if I am looking for immedate response for a pass I will flick the button and take the O/D off!!

Same here. From previous posts it seems the trans has a hard time with the 4th to 2nd downshift.... too much shock to the components.

If I'm going hard up the ramp, I'll leave it off until I take my foot out of the engine compartment, otherwise I leave it on. I've driven mostly with the o/d engaged, unless I was looking for a quick burst. During "gentle" acceleration, i. e. when it would shift on its own anyway, I leave the o/d on.

My O/D is programed to stay off until she hits 50mph. If I am at highway speeds and need to pass, I simply apply enough throttle to downshift to the next gear and go. For "spirited" driving, the O/D is off.
I think the 4th to 2nd gear trouble is more likely at slower speeds around town. Thats why I had the O/D disabled for slow driving.

My O/D is off until 50 then I turn it on.

So you leave O/D off running under 50 on a regular basis? Just normal driving or WOT?

When i am on the highway and i nail it in O/D the engine bounces off the rev limiter @ 6200 so i have let my foot off the gas take it out of O/D then hit it and when i am done take my foot off the gas nad put it back on.

I ONLY engage O/D when I hit about 60 on the expressway. All the rest of the time around town it is off. Actually, when getting up to speed I like to drop it into O/D while accelerating through 60 so it feels like a real upshift rather than while coasting.
