i posted on here several weeks ago about a slight overheating problem i had

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=15345

well, taking the advice from those posts, i did several things.

1.) checked coolant level, slightly low, so i got it topped off.

problem persisted

2.) took it to a dealership, told them of the problem, that i thought it was the thermostat. they come back and tell me they think it's air-bound, so they purge the system AND put a new thermostat in.

problem persisted

3.) they now have an order in for a cooling fan assembly because, by process of elimination, they believe the fan kicks off, thus causing the engine to overheat. so i have to bring it in on tues morning and get this taken care of. if it still persists, it'll be back there in a heartbeat. fortunately, the dealership that Marauder2005 recommended to me in this area is very helpful about everything, and they take the time to explain everything to me as i don't know alot about cars, just the basics.

does anybody have any input on what else the problem could be or has anybody had a new cooling fan assembly put in because of this?

any insight would be wonderful

Mine was in fact a stuck thermostat which turned into an engine replacement
several months later. You aren't specific about the overheat, is it really driving the temp gauge into the "Hot" mark? It's possible that the fan could be a problem, but in your area this time of the year, I wouldn't really thing so. Again, with the heater in the "Auto" mode, or any of the "A/C" positions, including "Defrost" positions, the air conditioner does operate, which in turn may or may not cycle the fan, depending on engine temp. I haven't paid attention to mien, but later this morning, I'll check and see if the fan cycles while sitting in the driveway with the heat system in the mose above. As for driving, with the cold temps in your area, I wouldn't think it would cause any overheating. How 'bout the water pump?
