View Full Version : Avoided NYC Beltway Crash
DEFYANT

I was cruzin home tonight (1/31/05) around 9pm on the NYC Belt Parkway around exit 18 or 19 and was enjoying my ride. Picture the scene if you will... I am really into the car, good tunes, both hands on the wheel (3 & 9 o'clock), proper posture and traveling around 65 MPH with the flow of traffic, center lane. Traffic was light to moderate. I am in the "zone". All of a sudden an SUV (left lane) and some 4 dr passenger car (center lane) crash. This occurs under one of the old original bridges. The SUV hits the left wall of the bridge, sparks everywhere, the passenger car spins out skidding horizontal in the center lane - my lane - right in front of me! I hit the brakes as hard as I could, the MM is not stopping fast enough... cant go right, I just passed a car, not sure if that lane is clear... I am going to hit this poor guy broadside! At what seemed to be the last moment before impact, I cut the wheel left! Then right! brakes off...mash the gas as I'm passing right through this accident as it is happening!! MM roared and cleared the wrecks with out a scratch. I had 2/3 of the left lane available due to the crashing truck and the skidding passenger car!
I immediatly attempt to stop, but other cars behind me following me through. Im in the left lane now, jersey wall, my speed is somewhere around 50 or 60.... and I just ***** myself. I had hit that break so hard, I hurt my lower back! By the time I found my cell phone and called 911, fire and police were already enroute in the east bound lanes. I think I continued on at about 45 MPH in the right lane to the Varrazano Bridge!
Thank god I was in this car, any other and I probably would have crashed.

Nice driving Defyant - but I already knew you were that good! Sorry about your underwear! I've had similar but NO WHERE NEAR AS CLOSE experiences on the Belt - not a good place to be distracted!

Glad to hear you made it through without any injuries to yourself or the car. That is one of the reasons I try to avoid the city any time I am in the area. On our way home from Boston last week a Blazer tried passing us on the right during the snowstorm on I-95 in NYC. Well lets just say he didn't make it, he tried to go through the deep snow on the shoulder spun 90* and got stuck. I waved to him as we went past. :neener:

I know what you are talking about...that belt parkway is so damn narrow for 3 lanes.

Glad you made it through unscathed. Sounds like a scene from out of "Days of Thunder". :D
Exactly where on the Belt Parkway was this wreck. I used to make the trip from Uniondale to Fort Hamilton frequently back in 1978-1980.
Sorry about your pants. I've come to notice that if I drive fast enough, all the accidents happen BEHIND me....:D

I hear Ya' Defyant!! Great driving skills! :2thumbs:
That is exactly why my first aid kit consists of:
One pair of clean underwear,
Half a roll of Charmin,
Leather cleaning kit and
One sample size can of Lysol.

Thanks everyone. Had I been distracted by the radio, heater, cell phone or anything else, I would have wrecked. I will be traveling after midnight from now on like I used to. There is much less traffic to deal with.

Never thought the Belt was all that bad. The roads get narrow in sections. They have been doing road work recently around the Coney Island train depot area. Looks like it got a bit wider there. I do dislike the short entrances onto the Belt though. Kinda hard getting my boat up to speed sometimes. :(

Belt Parkway usually as Marty stated is a "parking lot".
Morning or evening just as traffic is opening in one area, mile or so later...bumper to bumper.
Worst NYC roadway in my opinion Has to be Brooklyn- Queens Expressway which runs (largely) Staten Island to The Bronx.
