View Full Version : Oil filter drain deflector
carfixer
02-12-2005, 09:57 AM
Ford finally fixed a problem that every tech and owner that changes his/her own oil has complained about since the 2003 panther platform came out. When changing the oil filter, oil gets all over the frame and power steering rack.
On the '05 models, they are now using a little plastic deflector to channel the oil away from the frame and rack. I borrowed ;) one off a new car and guess what, it fits on my car.
It has 2 molded in clips that clip right onto the P/S pressure line just below the oil filter. Just spin the filter loose and let the oil drain from the filter and into your catch pan instead of the frame and rack!!
I got the part number from my parts department: 5W1Z-6N634-AA. The part is so new, there is no price on it and no stock in the country yet as of 2/11/05.
Here's a couple of pics of it:

Make that every 79-up Panther, and almost every 79-up Fox Chassis Ford.
The deflector is a solution to a problem that does not exist. The oil that gets on your frame and PS rack (for R&P) or steering linkages (for RB) simply protects it from rust as years go on.
The parts that DO NOT get an oil bath tend to rust after a few years. Either way, your car is still fully functional.
What's next? Are people going to complain their tires wear out when driving? :help:

Oil that puddles on the crossmember and then drips on the garage floor may not sound like a problem to you, but for some of us it is a big deal.

The 03-up Panthers get nice tin foil suspensions - I forgot about that.
The 79-02 Panthers had real suspensions and frames made of steel that would rust w/o a nice layer of oil!
As for the dumbass remark about oil puddling on the garage floor... use a damn cover for the ground if you're that concerned. I keep large cardboard boxes from refrigerators/dryers that I purchased in the past and slide that underneath. Rarely do I get oil spills on the cardboard because I have something that's called an oil catch pan. You know, the device that holds the oil you drain out of the engine oil pan...
Is that oil deflector going to prevent oil from dripping on the floor during a change? I thought it was there to prevent oil from getting on your steering rack? Or is this a magical deflector that keeps your Marauder's depreciation at bay?
For the 79-02 Panther owners that were that concerned about oil on the steering... they used cheap plastic bags to cover the linkages during oil changes. I stopped bothering with the bags because the oil keeps everything rust free. After 24 years, my 81 T-bird is rust free on the side where oil has caked and built into a 2" layer on the LCA bolts and steering rack. The other side that doesn't have oil has surface rust.
I'd vote that in the year 2025, I'd probably keep the Marauder underbody as greasy as possible to slow down or prevent rusting. Functionality over presentation. No one gives a crap about how clean the underbody of your car looks because it's a car... meant to be driven... on dirty roads. :bandit:

No one said you had to buy one! :censor:
Some people here drive their MM's in fair weather only, while maintaining a show car appearance underneath. :bows:
If they want to buy one of these deflectors and prevent 2" of oil from gathering on their suspension that is their perogative.
'Nuff said.
BTW. I want one too!

I don't think the remark you are referring to is dumbass, as you say. If I had oil on the ground under my car, I would want to know where it's coming from,(maybe a leak), one less thing to worry about. :coolman:
As far as cardboard boxes under your car, that must look real tacky, and I only use an oil catch pan when I change the oil, not to leave under the car to catch the oil residue as you do. :bs:
I give a crap about how my underbody looks, because the cleaner the car the better to spot leaks and stuff, plus a dirty car retains more heat than a clean car. :burnout:
If you don't want one of the plastic covers, then don't get one....nuff said :argue:

OK...
Let's try this scenario:
If you think think part is unsubstantial, don't post here. Post somewhere else. Go away.
There's more of us than there is of you. If you like a leaky class III oil covered underside...fine...be proud and share it with all of us. BUT DROP IT NOW. YOU MADE YOUR POINT, LEAVE US ALONE NOW. Not forever, just in THIS THREAD.
Lately too many threads are being washed as a result of one person disagreeing.
A few folks, maybe more, don't see this product as a good idea. Perhaps if I was driving a '92 crown vic....doh...I DO...and I didn't mind oil leaking all over my underbody...and I don't as a matter of fact because the beater vic is just that...a beater....
And my garage...let's not go there. Those who have seen it know that my BARN has more holes in the concrete than the moon. Enough holes to catch that dropping oil and no one would ever walk on it. But I sure won't throw card board down full time. As it is an oil change requires an entire Sunday newspaper just to catch spillage from this poor design.
But my Marauder is new, it's clean...it's NOT a beater. I am proud of the engine compartment and underside cleanliness. The spot it parks in in my barn, albeit a holy mess....doesn't have a single oil mark, and damnit that is the way it's gonna be.

Hmmm, keeping your car oily and dirty to prevent rust. Now that's a novel concept. I thought that's what paint was for. Anyway, I had read somewhere that Ford beefed up the frames on the all the panthers beginning in 03 (which ofcourse includes Marauders :D ), because there were cracks found in a few of the frames of the 01 and 02 CV police interceptors.
