My car has been leaking a small amount of oil and I could not figure out from where - until today.

Here is a photo of the oil leaking from a small hole next to the pully.

Does anybody know what this hole is and why oil would be leaking from it?

Thanks...

Directedby,

I do not have an answer for you. However, I have the same hole but no oil to be seen. (see below)
Surely someone will be chiming in shortly.

Mike.

I went out to check just now, no oil there. I would wipe the area clean and check again. I know that is not much help, the best I can offer is ask CARFIXER for an opinion, he knows our cars inside and out. Best of luck.:)

Possible timing cover gasket and or porosity in the timing cover.

Is there a possibility that the block is pores? :( (oil seeping through the block)

Possible timing cover gasket and or porosity in the timing cover.

The timing cover gasket could be leaking and/or there could be a flaw in the timing cover metal (it can become porrous). If your MM is still under warranty, take it in. That might give you crap about the crank damper, though.

Sure looks like your timing cover is pourous. Haven't seen one leak there before. Bring it on in. It is a rather involved job, plan on them having it for a day or 2.

BTW, it looks like he has the stock pullies on there.

I took my digital camera and was able to get a look into the hole.

It seems like there is a drilled hole inside this hole.

HELP!

Why is oil coming out of it?

You don't mention under-drive pulleys in your sig' and I not familiar with what the harmonic balancer on a DOHC looks like, but .....

I you do have U/D it could be the keyway leaking/seeping and flinging the oil. *With the U/Ds you have to put a dab of silicone in the keyway before tightening-down the harmonic balancer.

Anyway ... Just a thought.

If no U/D .... Never mind. :D

My apologies for starting this Pulley war. I stand corrected and realized that I need to upgrade my eyeglass prescription. All is forgiven??

Do I see threads in the drilled hole? Should there be an allen screw or bolt in that hole? Just a thought.:dunno:

What looks like what happened is the front timing cover was improperly machined at the factory. The hole for the power steering pump bracket was drilled too far and went into the other side of the cover. You will need a new front timing cover.

looks like its a weep hole, in any case, take the car in, there is a problem. Remember the engine shoudl be shiny side out, oily side in.

Sometimes a little brake cleaner and a bit of JB Weld is worth not going to the dealer.
Besides, it will add some personality to your car.

Besides, it will add some personality to your car.I haven't any arguments about the potentials of that JB Weld. However, if it's possible that the leak can be originating somewhere else(such as the timing cover gasket) other than where it's actually coming out, then using JB Weld might not fix the problem.

i was about to say how many miles on it and take it to the dealer, but your mods will void the warranty. good luck

dealer already looked at it and said to bring it in whenever I want.

WHY WOULD MODS VOID WARRANTY? All Bolt on, no internal changes.

if anything is added to the car to change its original platform, they might void your warranty.

nexstar7

make sure of that before they touch it. its kind of a catch 22. dont remind them of the mods because they will void it or they take apart the car then they say to you, HEY! YOU HAVE MODS, SINCE WE TOOK YOUR CAR APART WERE GOING TO HAVE TO CHARGE YOU. be carefull, please.

I believe that it really depends on what the failure is related to, and even more importantly, what dealer you go to. it's best to talk to the service manager in order to ask about his policies, and viewpoints on modified cars, and which mods he will overlook, and which ones he won't. however, the ideal thing to do, is to have that conversation with him while everything is still fine with your car, rather than waiting until when you have a problem. I wish you the best.

Before you bring it anywhere, I would try to at least snug all of the bolts on the cover,
clean off the oil and dirt, and see if it is still leaking.
If all it takes you is an hour to do this, and the leak disappears, you've saved yourself a trip to the dealer
and a lot of unnecessary hassles that you may have had to face.

I think someone simply drilled the hole in the wrong place at the factory!! Try a small screw with a rubber "O" ring...If that works you may want to clean it good and do the JB WELD thing??

Replacing that cover is a PITA!!!! Dealer may take a couple of days??

It might be a hassle, But a dealer visit records a problem on the main Ford oasis and if the problem is more troubles than it appears, you got your azz covered.

Good luck let us know how it turns out!

Took MM to Dealer. While I was waiting (walking around shops nearby) the mechanic called me and wanted to know if the pulley's were stock or mods. I told the truth and said stock.

Then later I went back to dealer and the service manager spoke to me. He said that the leak is a very strange one (coming from hole) and asked me about my mods. I told him the truth about the reflash, 4:10 gears, exhaust and fJTL. He said he would cover the new timing cover under warranty, provided when he got inside the engine it didn't have any internal mods.

He said that Ford is pretty tough on Warranty issues, but he could see that the oil leak (which I had since the day I bought it) was not due to any of the mods I had.

He called Ford and no other Maruaders or Cobras have had this kind of leak. It is either a pourouss cover or a crack.

He called up my Oasis report and my build date was 9/5/03 - he looked at his calendar and laughed that it was a Friday the day my car was built and they probably used my timing cover as a frisbee.

Anyway, this service manager was nice, professional and logical.

Part is on order and it will take 2-3 days to install.
