Have not seen anyone post this yet, but for those of you who use Mobil-1, I see that they changed their formula again. Check out their website.

The new stuff is "Mobil-1 Extended Performance" and it costs about a dollar more a quart than the "Mobil-1 SuperSyn" At the moment, their website shows that they are making both, however not in all weights. The very thin stuff is only being made in the previous SuperSyn and the thicker stuff is only being made in the EP: The mid range stuff is being made in both formulas, however they will probably drop the older formula.

What bothers me is that I can't get a good answer from their "Customer Service" if the newer stuff is still a Group IV PAO Synthetic. or if they have downgraded the newer stuff to a Group III HydroCracking Synthetic. Before this change, about the only PAO sold were Mobil-1 and AmsOil. Most of the others went to the HydroCracked stuff which is not nearly as good as PAO's or Group V Esters. If I can't get a good answer from them, I may have to switch to (I hate to do it, and hate to say it) AmsOil, which tells you on the case that it is a PAO, or to RedLine which tells you on the bottle that it is a
Polyolester.

BTW, If any of you don't know it, a few years ago, Mobil sued Castrol when the found out that Castrol Syntec had changed from a PAO to a HydroCracked oil, and was calling it a synthetic. Well, the powers to be said that the term synthetic could mean anything, so Mobil lost the suit. This was about 1998 or so. Now everyone switched to HydroCracked "synthetic" except Mobil-1 and AmsOil, because it is cheaper to make but it is not as good. I just hope that Mobil-1 has not lowered their standards.

Man, it really bummed me out when Coke changed their formula all those years ago, too. Hopefully they'll continue to sell the supersyn stuff.
