In reading some older threads, I get the impression that the 03 and 04 have different automatic transmissions.

If this is so, what are the differences? What was wrong with the 03 transmission?

I have driven two 03. One belonging to a friend, and one that I test drove last week. Tomorrow, I will test drive another 03.

My friend had our local Ford Dealer "Flush Out" the transmission fluid with new Mercon-V. He says that it now seems to shift smoother. The one I test drove seemed to have a strange noise at low speeds, on start up, in first gear and did not want to take any chances with that car.

If I don't buy an 03 before May, I will wait until after my European trip in September and then I will look for an 04.

I KNOW THE 2004 HAS A DIFFRENT CONVERTER AND A FEW OTHER CHANGES.

There are a few people on here who have owned both '03s and '04s. They'd be some of the best people to tell you the ride difference, plus I know RoyLPita has had some seat time in both types as well as a few modded ones.

I thought that the transmission in the '04 is different than the '03 in regards to the torque converter and the actual tranny itself. I thought the '04's for got a slightly heavier duty tranny than the '03. Can't remember the model number - 47R5W? Something like that?

EDIT: I think from what I have discovered reading on here is that those that have owned both the '03 and the '04 have liked the '04 better and commented that the '04 seems to run better - stock vs. stock. That is part of why I would like to find a '04 instead of an '03. Although, if Constable's car is still for sale when I am ready, I would jump all over that thing!!!!!

TRANSMISSION - The 2004 Marauder gets a new electronically controlled, 4R75W heavy-duty, four-speed with overdrive, automatic transmission for greater efficiency and low-end torque, along with an improved shift response. Other refinements include the addition of needle bearings and Teflon seals to the new reinforced, brazed, 11.25 inch, high-stall-speed, heavy-duty torque converter, with a one-inch, one-way clutch. The engine can rev higher, thus reaching its power band before the automatic transmission transmits power. This new transmission provides quicker up-shifts and downshifts, and lets the driver "kick down" into first gear at a higher speed. This produces quicker acceleration. The automatic transmission has also been beefed up to handle the V8's extra torque output.

With the pedal on the floor for a wide-open throttle, the Marauder reaches the first up-shift point at 6000 rpm, then moves from second gear into third at 6200 rpm, which almost meets the tachometer redline of 6250 rpm.
