Picked up my "New To Me" 03 tonight (See other thread) and I have a question about my tinted windows.

How hard (or easy) is it to Remove the tint? I understand removing from the rear window is very hard because of the defrosting wires in it. Is there anything that can be sprayed on the tint to make peeling it off easier?

I'm not as young as I once was, and I have a problem with my left eye that causes me to have bad night vision in that eye. My ophthalmologist saved my sight in that eye (god bless him) and I see good in the daylight, buy night vision is bad. Although my night vision in my other eye is good, I would rather have either a lighter tint, or no tint.

Bob,

It isn't as tough as you think. Depends on the quality of the tint and the abilities of the tint shop. I've had them remove tint on my old 87 Mitsubishi Starion and everything came out ok. He said he couldn't guarantee the defroster element... but it came off ok and no problems.

They have a solution that they spray on the film... and then let the car sit in the sun.... While some scrapping is involved it isn't razor blade and elbow grease only.

Find a good reputable tint shop...enough or their time and your money and I am sure they can hook you up! :burnout:

Not sure about that question. I bought mine used, and can tell it had tinted windows at some point, because if you look close you can see glue residue way down in the corners of each window. And they probably messed my defroster up on the back window taking it off because only half the lines actually work, and if the radio is on and I hit the rear defroster button, the radio turns into nothing but constant static until I turn off the defroster again. . .

Hey how long have been retired? I notice you were a crypto-tech.

My wife and I both have troubles seeing through the tint that was on our Marauder when we bought it. Although it looks great from the outside, it is a safety issue for us. I see 20/70 in one eye and 20/80 in the other. She has trouble with peripheral vision in her left eye . Age is catching up with both of us. I visited a local tint and detailing shop that did some work for us about 20 years ago, was impressed with them. Cost for them to remove the tint is 60 bucks. New tint if we want it will be about 190. Sounds like a bargain to me, they are less much likely to do damage than I will.

It seems that most agree the toughest part of removing the rear tint is possible damage to the rear defroster and perhaps the radio antenna grids. Even though most tint/detail shops won't guarantee against damage, they do indeed have the most experience at this type removal.

This method is called sweating, and usually only works when the temperatrue is abotu 90 outside. Either way, the glue has to be sc***** off the glass before new tint can be applied. Im in the same dillema right now, I want the back window DARK, and its 35 ....courtesy of the dealer :bop:

I like 5 or darker on mine.....

To Everyone;
Thanks for the information. Don't know yet if I will do it once the weather gets hot in Florida or will probably let a very good Tint Shop do it.

To gdmjoe;
I saved the website you sent. Great info, just in case I get crazy and decide to do it myself.

To CBT;

Just returned from "Auto Add-On's". There are cheaper places, but they are the best in my area, doing Quality work. Made appointment for Wednesday morning.

Present windows are so dark that I have trouble seeing out the rear window, even in the daytime. I wear sunglasses because it is so bright looking out the windshield, so my eyes are constricted, and when trying to look in my rearview mirror, I can't see diddly out the back. At night, again I can't see diddly as I have bad night vision in my left eye.

Also, the owner took one look at my windows and told me that they are illegal in Florida, just as I thought. Way too dark. Having a much lighter shade put on. Still will look good, and at least I will be able to see out.
