Because my buddy is driving home to California tomorrow morning, we decided to take photos of our cars, both Black 03, side by side. Noticed we had differend Chrome Exaust Tips. Both are long, but:
Mine is a "Slash Cut" tip. His, although slightly slash cut has the ends rolled in. Also his has a brand name, or writing engraved on the top of the tip. Don't remember what it said, but it had four letters. (written, not printed).
Are one of these stock and one aftermarket? They are both loud, but mine may be just a touch louder. :coolman:
(I cursed him for showing me his car, causing me to go out and buy one) ;)

Was your car pre-owned? sounds like the factory resonated(sp)
tips were replace with non-resonated tips...gives it a little more "meat"
to the sound.

Both flavors of the tips (with and without resonators) if they're from FoMoCo .....
- Are slash-cut.
- Have the rolled end.
- Have Meg's stamped on the upper lip edge.
- Are polished, stainless steel not chrome.

I kinda like my custom exhaust tips myself.
I went with @ the same length but WITHOUT the rolled edge(just NOT my thing). Of course' they are NON - resonated.
They are NOT cheap but I think they are pretty nice.
Sounds much better as well ... & FAR from being too loud.

OK. Mine must not be stock. Yes, my buddies said "Megs" on his. Wonder if I can do anything to make my aftermarket a little quieter. (Not quiet like stock, but just a little quieter). When I step on it, that thing roars.

Megs are the factory tips.

Check carefully on your tips to make sure they are indeed factory, there will me "MEgs" Engraved on top of the exhaust tip..... if not, I do carry the factory resonated tips that will quiet things down a little....are you not the original owner of the car?
Good luck!

PackRat (Denny Crane or Eric):
My tips are identical to yours. Identical!
To everyone else. Yes, I just purchased this pre-owned 03 on Monday. Runs great.
Additional Information: Went to visit my favorate technician, (Senior Master Technician that drives a Mustang GT or something like that with the same engine as the MM). I told him it seems louder than my buddies. He got down on all fours, and said, "Thats because it has Flowmasters on it". After I got home, I got down on my back and looked at the mufflers, and sure enough, the left side muffler says Flowmaster on the bottom. The other one probably says Flowmaster on the top side.
Know what? My tech said that the reason I thought they were loud was because I was not used to them. Said the sound is "Very Mellow". He is correct. I'm now getting used to it, and find that I now like the sound. :cool4:
I told him I have no idea if it has a "chip" and he said he would check it out when I bring it in for my next oil change. No problem if it does. I have been dealing with this tech for years, even phoning him from distant places to get information whenever I had a problem with a car. He is one tech that I trust.

The louder disposition is DEFINITELY from the Flowmasters.
My car is just a pinch more throaty than stock ... in fact I was actually expecting MORE sound out of it after changing the tips.
It's still VERY quiet under cruise ... the only time you really notice a difference is under acceleration(the same qualities of 100% stock IMHO - just louder & a lot nicer ).
I've been thinking ...
My Town Car would probably sound pretty nice with someones OEM MM "take off" mufflers.
Some of my exhaust system experiences :
My 72 Toronado has Pro-Flow mufflers on it(stock Olds 455 4bbl full duals). They have a great sound under cruise/acceleration ... but they were VERY loud at idle(ended up putting resonators back on it - way TOO loud at idle IMHO for that car). Bottom line ..... much louder idle - acceleration & cruise muffler.
My 84 Cutlass(mild build 79 Olds 403 4bbl single Y pipe into 2 mufflers & pipes) has the Walker mufflers (83/4 Hurst Olds - 85-87 442 spec) called for ... nice sound. Very nice improved idle sound w/o being too loud ... & nice under accleration/cruise sound. Bottom line ... mildly louder idle - cruise/acceleration.
A 92 F250 that I had(Stock 460 FI Auto single into dual outlet muffler) ... a Flowmaster single in - dual outlet - pipes - tips etc ... loud idle - loud acceleration/cruise. I liked it, but it was a truck ... would NOT want ANY of my current cars to sound like that. Bottom line ... much louder idle - acceleration & cruise muffler.
2001 Mountaineer I had(Stock 302 FI AWD single into single outlet muffler). Removed factory tail pipe with resonator - single in single out Magnaflow & diff tailpipe. Very nice improved idle sound w/o being too loud ... & nice under acceleration/cruise sound. Bottom line ... mildly louder idle - cruise & acceleration muffler.
Attaching some photos of the FINISHED product exhaust tips on the MM.
Note ...
Cat NOT included.

Hey Bob ...
I just remembered something.
Aren't you a member of a Yahoo group for the Marauder & posted something a couple of months back ?.
Rather DEAD group.
I was the one that replied to you there(& only one I think - lol)
