View Full Version : 4.10 Gear---Which ones to get & other questions

Need the collective wisdom of the MM.net members. It's time for my '04 to get 4.10's and a shiney hinnie. Was leaning towards Ford Racing gears. My questions:
1. Is it worth the extra money for the Ford Racing gears? Some other gear sets are cheaper. I'm concerned with noise & longevity.
2. Should I get a basic install kit or a full install kit with wheel bearings and have the wheel bearings replaced at the same time? Have 14,000 miles on my '04.
3. What kind of lube should I use?
Thanks Guys!
This is the best place to be on the net!!!! :)

Ford racing gears are fine. The alternative is pricey:o
I would only replace Wheel bearings if it was an early '03 and Ford would not replace them on thier dime (TSB)
My wrench used all Motocraft fluids and parts.Gear oil, Friction modifier, some one help me Pinion nut? crush sleve, shims come with the gears.

My guy said if you don't preload pinion gear it will never be right.
I am not a tech so I am sure the wrench talant here can explain this better.
I was forewarned they might be noisey but I don't hear any adverse noises.

I just had my 4.10's intalled the other day and I went with the Ford Racing Gears. If you do the install youll need 1 bottle of friction modifier and a few bottles of rear end fluid. Its kinda pricy but its well worth it. As for the noise ....if the gears are installed correctly then you shouldnt hear any noises.....No noise on mine. Make sure you have a good custom tune or chip otherwise the shift points will be all screwed up and your speedo will be about 10-15 mph off.

I got FR gears for about $170 shipped. If you search the net enough there are places that are decently priced. just for piece of mind, I would get new bearings. You know everything is new when the job is finished.

1. Is it worth the extra money for the Ford Racing gears? Ford Racing is what is sold by Dennis and Wes...and was recommended to me by my install tech.
2. Should I get a basic install kit or a full install kit with wheel bearings and have the wheel bearings replaced at the same time? The basic kit should be fine...you shouldn't need to replace the wheel bearings, but make sure you replace the pinion bearing.
3. What kind of lube should I use?I used Mobil 1 75W-90 and one bottle of the Ford friction modifier, again on the recommendation of my install tech.

2004 with 4:10 Ford Racing Gears, here.
Had it done a few months ago.
$170 for gears from Reinhart.
Had them installed at a rear end shop (only do differentials). Took them 4 hours and cost $200.
I had 15,000 on car and was told everything back there looked like new - no reason for new bearrings.
This is one mod I would not do myself - if it is off a tiny bit - it will whine or hum.
Good luck and you must reflash PCM for shift points and speedo. I went with SCT excalibrator tuner and tune by Reinhart.

You guys are mentioning the tune and the vendors that sell it are Alt. Auto Performance and DR. There is a price difference between the two. I was wondering if the one from AAP has different programming than what DR sells?
If you need to modify the settings how much do they charge to change it?

Cartman, maybe you should do a search and read other threads.
Very dangerous question to ask - it will cause a flame war - between the DR guys and Alt guys.
Both are great tunes.
Lastly, this thread is about 4:10 gears - no thread hijacking.
Good luck and I hope you find the info you seek.

Much good 411!!!! I bought an SCT from DR that is supposed to have a program for the 4.10's already installed. I can get the FRP 4.10's locally for $170.00, he also recommended I replace the pinion bearing because it might split when you remove it. I'm also going to do the shiney hinnie, can get it for $159.00, that's about $20.00 more than online but it's also a Ford Performance part. My stage 1 is: underdrive pulleys, JLT CAI, colder plugs & stat, 4.10's & chip / tune. :D

This is what I have chosen:
gears- Ford (they are best for our cars IMO)
Chip/engine tune- Lidio of Alternative Automotive
Rear end fluid- Motorcraft 80W90 and don't forget the one 4oz bottle of friction modifier!!!
...BTW, I wouldn't mess with the wheel bearings unless they're making noise. There's always a possibility of new bearings being bad, so you might open up a can of worms by replacing axle bearings if you don't need to. get a basic installation kit which includes ring gear bolts, and the two pinion bearings. Those bearings should be replaced alwys during a ring & pinion gear change, since it's always likely that the outer cage of the large pinion bearing will be distorted when they press off the bearing from the old pinion gear. So it shouldn't be re-used.
I would also get the permanent type LOC-TITE (the RED kind) and hand it to the mechanic, and request that he use it on the ring gear bolts.

Get your shiney hiney from Wes at innovative interceptors. It's exactly the same as the Ford unit, at a much better price ....and you're supporting one of our vendors, not to mention our good friend Wes. BTW, there's install instructions for the shiney hiney posted in the tech section. :D

^^^what Mike said^^^
It's exactly the same because the one Wes sells is made by TA Performance, and they actually manufacture them for Ford Racing...the only difference is which name is engraved on it...

Also maybe before installing the girdle either take out the drain plug and teflon tape it or silicone it in place to prevent seepage later..
The one Wes has(T/A Performance) Looks great as well thats were i bought mine...
