View Full Version : Got 1k to spend

Now this thread isn't meant to brag in any way. In fact for those who know me 90% of the time I'm broke from making the car payment alone, and just dreaming. Soon I will have approximately $1,000 to spend after ending a three month project on my brother's truck.
I'm calling out to all who are experienced and have spent their money and realized which mod got a better bang for the buck. Yes I've searched, and mostly I find mixed opinions and all I want to see is if you have the mod - how is it? was it worth it? and most importantly, would you do it again?
I was leaning towards 4:10 Gears, and no we are not starting a fight about those - but given my current commute that MAY not be the best idea depending on gas mileage. I drive about 500 miles per week, mostly highway and I cruise at 80MPH. That puts me near the 2750 or 2800 RPM, right? Would that hinder my gas mileage?
Some ideas: Electric Water Pump, 4.10:1 Gears, Underdrive Pulleys, SCT Tune, Transmisson Modifications, High Flo Cats + X Pipe, ???
It is confirmed that I will spend a portion on mufflers, I've decided that so far. Leaning towards Flowmaster Super 40's.
So from the $1,000 you've spent, if you have, which mods on your list would be the best...maybe a top 5? I know some of you have got the same mod-bug that I do.
Warm weather is approaching and I WILL be turning more heads :cool4: This is my MM's first spring/summer.
Also if you're going to flame me, you don't even have to respond to this thread in the first place. It is threads like this that make searching so much easier.

In my opnion the best way to spend that money would be 4:10 Gears and a Lidio tune by far will improve your everyday fun factor the most.
That's what I did and was very happy!
Good Luck and as always this is just my opnion!

Ggears for the most part are around $180, tuner is about $400, mufflers are about $400 for both. Total brings it to about $980, so that meens your going to need some more for install. If you can hold off on the mufflers then you can go with thte under drive pullies. But also what is your final goal with your car, where do you want to be in 5 years with it?

Here is what I spent -
Gears $170
SCT $375
Gear Install $200
Flowmasters including Install $250
Total - $995

I would get 4:10 gears and a tune. A good friend of mine, Cobra25, just started using a tune by Lidio and says it is the best tune he has ever had. I do not think you need anything else if your not going to heavily mod your car, not even the mufflers.

This all depends on YOUR goal. If you want to change the sound, do some exhaust work. If you want to run faster times, do the chip and gears. MY initial goal was to run the fastest times at the track, while spending the least amount of money.
I did this as my first mod. It cost me under $1,000 including labor, in fact I had a bit more than $100 left over. Chip and gears from Alternative Auto.
I went from a best 15.199 @ 93.xx stock, to...
my current 14.234 @ 97.17 with chip and gears only + 100 unleaded gas.
Took damn near an entire second off the car from stock.
My sig shows Nittos and other things currently, but I store my car from November until mid April...so I've never even been on the street with those mods, let alone run it at the track.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your decision.

I would definitely do the underdrive pulleys and SCT tune, plus getting the spiral-lock clip and forced tailshaft lube mods on the transmission. The electric water pump may also be a good idea, but I have no experience with it. Another good mod is the larger rear sway bar and/or upgraded control arms.
Regarding the 4.10s, that decision will be a tough one. On the one hand, they DO wake the car up a LOT, and I'm glad I did it. On the other hand, you *may* want to stick with the 3.55s...generally the reduced highway mpg is somewhat compensated for by slightly improved around-town mpg, so the net is only perhaps -1 mpg, but if you do primarily highway driving at 80 mph, you will most likely experience a greater drop in mileage.

With all that time driving on the highway, consider Flowmaster 50's, not 40's. You may not want the drone at highway speeds that comes with the two chamber Flowmasters. IMOH and experience.

Mufflers are a big deal to me, I like the sound that is stock but it isn't what I'm looking for. I had flowmaster 40 Delta Force mufflers on my 99 CV, and it sounded nice and the only drone was at 30-45MPH with O/D on. I heard some clips of the super 40's on their website and I'm almost hooked.
Eventually my mods will be on each angle of the car. Not just going fast, not just sounding nice, etc...I want my MM to handle on rails, sound like a beast with a growl at the tail end and a whine at the front end, and crank out more power than I'll ever have a purpose for. Thats when I win the lottery, of course.
I've been talking to Wes and maybe I will hold onto it for a little while. I've got some things sitting around that I want to sell. I'm also thinking I need to take two $100 bills, leave them alone on some leopard print sheets and supply black lighting then check the results in the morning. Thank you for your thoughts, keep em coming!

Well to me bang for the buck means I spend $xxx amount of dollars and I run xx.xxx @ xx.xxx mph at the track. So based on that definition.
Dennis Reinhart flash, cooler plugs and stat, = $500
Results = 14.49 @ 97.51.
Spend the other $500 on Steeda U/D's and mufflers of your choice.
Anyway's I give you money spent and tangible results. If anybody is running faster on less money spent, let's hear it :D Good luck with your choices.

I would say a good tune by Lidio, 410's, Electric water pump, and a Steeda crank pully only.

I have not raced my Marauder at the track since My tune (by Lidio)and 4:10 gears. It was from the recomendation of the board that I chose these. You can drive my car pm me for a time.

I would go with the 410 and chip from Lidio. It is probably your best "bang-for-buck" mods. For a few horses and great sound go with one of the cold air intake packages. I have the K&N Air Charger kit and love it. Good luck with whatever you do.
