View Full Version : "So that's the same as a police car, right?"

Well maybe the same as some in Florida... but how else can I answer this question?
What are the differences, beside the motor and the lack of lights and radios?

Mercury vs. Ford

DOHC vs. SOHC

11,052 cars vs. Lots and Lots more...

Just look 'em straight in the eye, and say, "No, it's not."
:D
J/K. The obvious difference is the engine. CVPI's also don't have the RAS, usually don't have a radio, have a vinyl rear seat, rear door lock delete from the inside, etc... there's other stuff, but it doesn't come readily to mind right now...

Maybe you could say, "the guys who drive 'em", but there's a bunch of LEO's hanging out here, who have MM's as their POV.

Then again, there's at least one guy who claimed to be an LEO, and didn't have an MM either.

Don't forget the other stuff:

1) Different suspension setup (springs, shocks, etc)
2) Different interior (no console, different buckets, some have rubber floor instead of carpet, etc)
3) Of course the motors and tranny and about 55 horsepower or so
4) Wheels and tires
5) As stated, Mercury vs. Ford

But, obviously, to the average Joe, they have no clue that there is a difference.

Simple, in 29 years I have never seen a police fleet vehicle with leather seats, not to mention the french stitching.

Also the MM comes standard with the "Grin" factor. No extra charge !!

and also the rear fascia, exhaust pipes/tips, 18 inch polished aluminum wheels, vehicle raked stance 245/55 rears, 235/50 front, air adjust suspension, heated seats/mirrors, ... and more.

And the number one difference between a cop car and a Marauder is:

1. The back seat smells much better. No :puke: .

Also a console shifter, sunroof option, fog lights, and no spotlight(s).

A guy in work always makes fun of my car by saying to me...."Hey, how's that Grand Marquis doing?"......so one day I said......."My Marauder is different than the Marquis and the Crown Vic in the same way that the 64 GTO was different than the Tempest and LeMans were....same basic body style and car, but more power, and bigger wheels. It's also the same difference as it was between the late 60's Chevelles and the Malibu's. But nobody back then went around calling the GTO a LeMans, nor the Chevelle SS a Malibu"......after hearing that, he had nothing to say but...."yeah, you're right".....

If it's me behind the wheel, it's a Marauder. If it's my brother behind the wheel, it's a police car. They have lghts and sirens, we have smiles and classy rides.

Extra welds in the frame, oil cooler, power steering cooler, transmission cooler, stiffer suspension, etc.

Mine has all cloth interior with carpet, power driver seat with power lumbar, cruise control (pretty rare in a PI), rear doors and windows work from the back and AM/FM/Cassette (switched to an OEM singal disc CD player.)

And yes, that's the original color. :D

You know you struck a point!
If it is expained that way they nod the head and say yeah.
Funny thing is they know about a 40 year old car and not a "new" one :mad2:

Good answer!

What are the differences, beside the motor and the lack of lights and radios?I just tell 'em It has 30 more horsepower, better handling and (mine has) racing brakes, so it's actually a police interceptor interceptor. One thing is missing though. An actual police car has an extra motor they use for light speed in special circumstances.

It's called a Motorola! :D

Pfft.. some of us have those too :)

Mine just talks to the coast guard instead of cops.. different color helicopters for one thing..

You reminded me about one other thing Captain...

...a properly modded Marauder can also outrun those helicopters.

You happen to know the top speed of those Coast Guard choppers? I think I read somewhere the police choppers are 145 MPH top speed.

Since the shortest distance from point "A" to point "B" is a straight line, you will seldom be able to outrun them with a car. ;)

I was told once that the top speed on a helicopter was limited by the net forward speed of the leading edge of the blade ... i.e. the sound barrier issue. :dunno: Anybody else heard this??

Oh, I think it would be fun to try, as long as it wasn't the police chasing me. :D

However, the helicopter pilot that Ford hired to fly the camera man around the race track that the Ford GT was being tested on last year stated in a brief interview that the Ford GT was the first car ever that he could NOT keep up with flying over the track in the helicopter.

HMMMM, I work in a helicopter manufacturing plant, but I've never heard that. Which BTW doesn't neccessarily mean that it isn't true. I'm not an engineer. Just a worker bee. However, bullets fly at supersonic speeds as do jets, so I don't know if that would be an issue with the leading edge of the blades on a helicopter. I might ask around about that. :hmmm:
