...So I'm back from a long weekend in Connecticut and playing catch-up today. A dozen phone calls to return, clients to see, etc. Somehow I have to find the time to get the Marauder up to Four Star for a detail. I manage to squeeze this in between 1 and 2 o'clock, on the way to a client's house in Bradenton.
The car fires up, and I back it out of the garage, mindful not to put a cold engine under boost, and wince a little bit when the sunlight hits it. She's dirty and needs a full detail. I take it pretty easy between my house and the highway. Heavy traffic.
State road 681 links U.S. 41 and I-75 North. The stoplight before it is four lanes wide, two lanes on the left head north on 41, two lanes on the right going onto I-75. I am in the far right-hand lane. My intentions are clear. The lane to my left is empty. A black toyota Supra pulls up. Targa top off, windows down, some unintelligible gibberish blares out of the speakers. Remember the TV show "Dance Fever"? Remeber the host, "Denny Terrio"? This was him [or a very close facsimile]. He's got it all, baby. Body kit, double decker spoiler, fart can, oh-and a couple of dozen stickers. I look over, and look away.
"Denny" revs his engine. Big mistake. I click off the overdrive, cinch up my seatbelt, and look back over. Disco-ricer wants to race. My windows are up, A/C is on, Dokken's "It's not love" cranking on the stereo. The light turns green and we both hit it. I did a half-stab/half throttle roll, and creamed him right off the line. Trilogy 54 hazes the rear tires for about 20 feet, then digs in. I am 2 car lengths ahead and pulling away. Denny hits 2nd gear and starts to close. I manual shift from first to second, the rear tires spin about a rotation and a half, the tachometer reaches for the sky, and I regain my edge. By now, we are on an empty freeway on-ramp. As I shift into "D", he becomes visible in my driver's side mirror, looking like I just ran over his dog. I stay into it well onto the ramp-we are really moving now. After about a half-mile, I lift and tap the brakes so I can say "hi" to Denny.
Nope. Denny damn near comes to a stop to avoid catching me, and ditches off the Clark Road exit. Oh, well. Perhaps next time he'll pay a little more attention to the "Marauder S/C" fender decals, and give the big Merc a lot more respect.
She's going to enjoy that detail...:)

Nice story Chuck. That's one cool attribute about a S/Ced Marauder. They look at it and think to themselves..."Look at that big barge with mag wheels on it.....does grandpa really think his car is quick?...well I'll have to show him what quick is" ...and the rest is history. :D
It seems so coincidental when they get beaten badly, and then they suddenly have to pull off of the highway, doesn't it? The porsche that I beat was the same way. he got beat once, and then after we both backed off on the throttle, he then tried again, and was beaten a second time, and then seconds later he decided that he had to get off on the very next exit, and did so. :D

The Supra and Celica are girlie cars. The Supra was built for manly women.
Surprised to hear man was driving it.
Are you sure it wasn't a really ugly girl?:P

:flamer: Good kill! I bet Denny thought his decals would give him a needed boost! Oh well, that's what he gets for thinking.

DITTO! Love to read these stories, especially because i get little to no opportunities to do likewise here in the land of two-lane roads on hills and curves, very little four-lane, and the closest interstate 40 miles away. Not to mention that my MM is not (yet) SC'd, and most of the competition would be hot-rodded American pickup trucks, not imports. It's about enough to make me want to move to the city again, or at least to a more populous area with some multilanes, on-ramps, curvaceous service roads, and cloverleafs. :bigcry: You guys have some nice roads in Fla. Unfortunately for me most of my experience on them was towing my 5.0 to Sebring a couple of years ago. Keep up the true tales of toasted rice and other delicacies. :banana2:

Geez...reading stories like this give me goosebumps. I wanna go fast so bad, but there's no way I could handle that kinda investment right now.
Patience, I keep telling myself. Patience. :(

Tallboy, I am curious as to why you are manually shifting, my experience is w/ an aftermarket tune the computer does the fastest shifting for acceleration.

Hey man, I'm with you on that one for the most part.
I would just melt to have a Trilogy MM in my driveway, that's all. Man by the time you and I get Marauders...they'll have a bazillion miles on them:depress:

Good question. You're right about the computer shifting the trans better than I ever could. If I thought it would be a close race, no way would I manual shift. But, I felt pretty confident on this one, and I like the tire noise on the 1-2 upshift. Adds a little insult to injury.;)
