Could the Capri be in mercury's future.Man it's about time..

A Mercury Mustang?

A MERCURY MUSTANG? Ford Motor Co. will consider a new Mustang-based car for Mercury. Barb Samardzich, executive director of Ford Motor Co.'s small-car platforms, says she will prepare a business case for the project. She says a Mercury convertible and coupe derived from the Mustang are high on her list of "cycle-plan wants."

You know at this point I would be happy with anything even if it's from the parts bin.

If history is any indication it will be a parts bin effort.

You know, I would love to see a new Mustang-based Capri coupe and convertible. But what bothers most, is the three previous generations of Capri's that Mercury couldn't sell and didn't seem to have a clue about, in the past. I just wonder if this will be another failure for Mercury. I truly hope not, because they can use all the performance iron they can muster to improve their image. Since the demise of our beloved Marauder, Mercury has no real muscle in their line-up. And they are now facing a performance onslaught not seen in many a year from Chrysler and Dodge. Plus you have a number of excellent import nameplates with killer performance cars. Right now, General motors with Chevrolet is also asleep at the switch, except for the Corvette. They don't have the Camaro anymore, and Pontiac hasn't got the Trans Am anymore. Are Ford, Lincoln-Mercury and GM all dead from the head up? What do they talk about in their meetings? Do they realize the product offerings that are popping up all over.

Why use the Capri name? It's got some haritage, but it's not the best.

I think it should resurect the cougar name.

I'm with you on that one....the Capri name has too much baggage attached to it. I think of the name as attached to big Lincolns of years gone by, than a cheapo little European Ford concoction sold at L-M dealers in the seventies (many at Ford/L-M won't even admit to remembering that one anymore) and finally as a somewhat overdone (styling wise) Mustang clone. Except for the occasional four door version (usually seen as police package cars as I recall) and of course the latest, foreign built "Cougar" compact from a couple years ago; the cougar name still carries some respect IMHO.

I agree, the original Cougars were built from the Mustang platform, why not do it again?

I agree it should be a Cougar. I owned a 1973 Mercury Capri V6 Sport Coupe. It was actually a very well made German car. Fast and outstanding handling. Easily modified. I won many a street fight with that car. No resemblance what so ever to a Mustang. That came during the Mustang II years. Then there was a Capri ragtop made down under that we won't talk about.

I would got the for the new "Cougar" if it had the Mercury upgraded interior.

But not if it had less power than the Ford version.

Mercury hasn't done well with the niche type cars since the late 60's & early 70's. Let's hope they get it right this time.

Logan needs another hobby,LOL! He already has Marauder and Cougar websites, so maybe he can start a Capri website.

For the car itself, maybe Steve Babcock can be the project director and Miss Elana will give him sufficient latitude this time.

Give it options like 5.4L s/c V-8, 6 speed transmission, tuned suspension.

Guess it's time for the chaplain to start praying. -kjs-

I'd like to see a stretched Mustang as the new Cougar. Maybe then I could get a Mustang I could fit in.

I agree with the Cougar Idea too. They even have that retro metalic lime green that was so popular on the Cougars. Hopefully someone form LM division marketing monitors this site.....

I don't care what they call it. Just put a S/C under the hood and a 5.4 liter power plant and make the engine compatible with the Marauder. That's my wish. :burnout:

This concept and every other Merc needs to be exclusive over the Ford counterparts. More than just a different color combination.

A slightly larger (stretched) Mustang is actually a kick-arse idea!

How about a stretched Mustang with hidden, no outside handle, rear suicide doors similiar to the new Mazda RX8? I was considering one of those until I saw in person that it is a go cart with a body. The hidden rear doors were a plus for me with a young daughter.

They will be making that engine soon....in the upcoming SVT Mustang / Shelby GT500, and it will have the intake on the driver's side.

As soon as they come out I'll be watching the Kar Kraft website for one of these engines taken out of a prototype and posted 'For Sale'!

(They already have a 300HP 3 valve '05 Mustang GT engine for sale)
