My wife has decided to look for a "beater" then hand her '04 Mountaineer over to me and make the Beast a Garage Queen! :bows:

OK. . She called tonight and found a car she wants to look at tomorrow sometime.

Now. . Flame Suit on, she wants to look at a 1995 Mazda MX6.

I have owned Ford products my entire life with the exception of one Mopar product.

Any members out there who have owned an MX6 or known someone who has?

Understanding every car has it's own personality, good and bad. Are these known to be good dependable transportation or POS?

Thanks in advance. . .

Mike.

My brother-in-law owns a V6 auto Mazda MX6 and has had very good luck with it. He has many miles on it (I'm not sure of the mileage, buts it's 100,000+) and really likes it. He just bought a new RX-8 and is keeping the MX6 as his winter/snow car.
P.S. His RX-8 gets HORRIBLE gas mileage...@17MPG no matter how he drives it!

MX-6 in earlier years is the twin for the Ford Probe.
Both are built by Mazda.

I have a friend with two MX-6s. He autocrosses one of them. Has had the car for quite awhile, taught to kids to drive on it. He likes it and it has held up well.

I have had 3 MX-5s in the family and other than they can be a PITA to work on sometimes.... they don't ask for much and hold up well. My wife has put over 100k miles on two of them.

I would give the MX6 a lookover like any other car.... but I wouldn't be afraid of a Mazda. Only bad Mazda I've had was a 2002 B4000 4wd Truck and that was really a rebadged Ford!

I read somewhere that a replacement starter for one of those is around $1,200or something similar. Might be an ok car but parts are expensive!

" We don't need no stinking 1,200 dollar starter! " :bandit:
That's what junkyards are for....

where the vehicle is made is secondary, I wouldn't put anyone I care about in a small vehicle. If you have ever seen the crash physics of an accident at even a moderate speed, you'd only let your loved ones drive big cars.

Way back when I was on the street every time a crash happened and it had a small car involved the occupants went to the hospital. SUV owners called home and said they'd be late.

something to ponder.

Buddy had Pymouth Colt with Jap engine. Junkyard distributor, $350.00, new was twice that. More than the car was actually worth.

I believe they came the 2.5 DOHC Duratec motor that Ford used in the Probe GT, Countour SE and eventually had a hot rodded version in the Contour SVT. My wife had a 97 Contour SE with that motor and we were pretty impressed with it. I believe it was rated at 170 hp and o.k on gas. Seem to remember the magazines were very impressed with the handling of the MX6.

I just found an old Car and Driver that tested an MX6 LS. 0-60 in 7.1, 1/4 in 15.7 and .85 g's on the skid pad.

I really don't know personally much about there longterm reliability.

Good Luck.

Mazdas hold up....but some parts casn be pricey. I have owned three in my time.

The RX-8 has horrible MPG as a result of the rotary. All rotarys drink fuel and burn a ton of oil. Always have.

Yeah, I keep telling my brother-in-law that my old 4X4 Blazer gets BETTER gas mileage than his RX-8!!
Then I remind him that my 4400LB modified Marauder will still knock down 22-23 MPG on the highway!
