What are you going to do with the stock gauge? I'd be interested in taking it off of your hands.

I did the gauge replacement this past Sunday. Replaced both the oil pressure and volts. The swap was easy, completed in less than 1 hour. I used the factory wiring and lights, soldered and heatshrink tubed every connection. Looks good and it's nice to have a "working" oil pressure gauge.

Question: When cold the oil pressure is about 100lb, if I increase the RPM's I can get the needle to go over 100lbs (off the scale). At operating temps oil is at 37lbs at idle and increases to 100lbs depending on the RPM's. Is this normal? Have 17,400 miles, running 5w20 semi-synthetic Motorcraft oil, changed every 5,000 miles.

Fastblackmerc,
All is well with your pressures with 2w/20 motorcraft oil.

With Royal Purple I run a little lower at a 700rpm idle,about 25psi.

BTW Without a dought my working oil pressure gauge saved me some money.
Without it I would not have noticed my oil pressure drop until the pressure went below 6psi! At 2500rpm I'm sure i would have had some damage.

See my "I woke up in a great mood" thread for details.

After my first oil change at 500 miles, I was sitting at a light and noticed that my oil pressure dropped to 0  (factory gauges). I couldn't get the engine turned off fast enough. Popped the hood right there, no oil on the ground, showing to the full mark on the dipstick. Started it up listened for any noises, heard none, drove home, made an appointment at the dealership. They found nothing. I think it was a bad electrical connection.

Way to go, fbm...! I can't understand why everyone doesn't do this mod...

As others have already said, your oil pressure is fine. I get ~100 lbs on a cold start, and hot idle is about 25 lbs. On our road trip to the Cleveland meet via Lidio's (we're in Rochester NY right now), I'm getting about 75 lbs at 75 MPH (2500 RPM). This is on Mobil 1 5W-30.

This should go on the resource room board thingy. And the your can see the pics on this one:)
Good job!
So what I am hearing is: Our OEM Oil gauges are not real good? I don't know, just asking for my own info.
Thanks,

Thanks,
The original MM oil pressure gauge is a "dummy" gauge. Just tells you that you have oil pressure. A "real" gauge's readings will fluxuate(?) with increase or decrease in RPM's. I think FOMCO made it like that so the average customer won't complain that the gauge doesn't work or his oil pressure is too low....

My tranny temp, A/F & boost/vac gauges will go in the pillar pod. If I need to add more gauges I can use the cig lighter location & install a steering column pod.

So what I am hearing is: Our OEM Oil gauges are not real good? You could put it that way...it's not real good at all; it's not even functional...as long as you have more than ~6 lbs of pressure, it will always read "62 lbs" (more or less)...get it replaced with a WORKING gauge...

The reason why is that Mazda before Ford took control had a real Oil Press. guage in the 1990/92 Miata MX5's. So many people brought they'ers in that Mazda was swamped with nonexistent problems that it was 1 of the reasons Ford took control of the company that and they couldn't move any of they'er $40,000 RX7's
