We have been working hard on the tuning and operation of Legal Knevil and he sure has come a long way since we got started just over a year ago.

Here is the most recent dyno pull:

http://www.legalknevil.com/albums/Marauder/atd.sized.jpg

Before taking him out to the track, we backed off the tune for several reasons. First, I must admit, I have never driven a car that is even remotely close to this power level. Hell, my boat makes 750 hp, but that is off of two diesels that are the size of Volkswagen Beetles! Second, better safe than sorry. We know that the motor is good for well over 700 hp without spraying the nitrous, but that will all come in due time. My boy Aric Carrion knows his tuning, so I leave the power in his hands.

As you may know, last week my buddy Todd and a bunch of my Atlanta based friends and I (Jeff (Shankin on this site), Aric Carrion (not a member), Jimbo all loaded up and went to a private test and tune session at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia. Aric felt it best to neuter the tune so that I could learn the car and we could study the motor as we moved along.

Well, after a couple of passes, I got this as my best slip for the day:

http://www.legalknevil.com/albums/Marauder/ate.sized.jpg

It is obvious that my driving skills can stand some "fine tuning"! I need to get my sixty foot times down and this car will really haul ass. Meanwhile, I am pretty pleased with my time and just look at the trap speed on this thing. It is making some beans for sure!!

After the weekend, was over Aric came over to me and said "How do you feel?" I said "GREAT!!" He said "Good, because there is a ***** load left in the motor". Both Aric and Jeff feel that this car may well see the 10's if we up the tune and spray it. Wow! If I run in the 10's, I will probably pizz my pants!

The excuse department:

1. My driving sucks! But I am working on that.
2. This car is a pig weight wise. It has a ton of stuff on the interior (leather, Dynomat, the cage, the ice chest, etc.). So this beast is tipping the scales at 4,800 pounds with my lard ass in it. Eeek!

I wanted to wait to post all of this up until I had the videos and pictures loaded up, but I have been swamped here at work and it may be a few more days before I have time for that.

So, for now, I do not have the fastest Marauder yet, but i am gaining on those few that remain above me on the timeslip list. Watch your bumpers and your backs, I am coming for ya!! :D

On a final note, I want to thank Todd for all of his help through this project. He has been a huge help and I could not have done this without him. Now, we will see if he will take me up on my offer to drive LK.

Who needs all that explanation, congrats on awesome numbers and an awesome car. If 10s were your sole goal you'd be driving a Mustang.

Hopefully you will get 10's. Many of us including me suck at drag racing - I've done it once. If I get into the 11s I'll be as happy as you hitting 10s.

Ditto what he said ^ there.

Moving large cars down the 1320 is a real challenge, no one has really tried it since the hay days of the Impala SS. Nice job, congrats, and keep at it.

Thanks for the update Martin ole boy...... this is so cool!! I luv looking at timeslips too, so I'm glad that you posted yours. With the info on them you can tell exactly where you and your car's strengths and weaknesses are in any given stage of the quartermile. So far, I still have you in the 60' department with mine being a consistent 1.6 seconds, but your monster of a car despite your inexperience with it is already right on par with mine by the 330' mark which I see is the same 4.9 seconds as my car runs.

But then by the 1/8th mile mark that centrifugal supercharger power is really beginning to take over. Because your 1/8th mile time is very close to mine, however, your car is already traveling 6 MPH faster than mine is, which ofcourse predicts what's about to follow from there on. Your 1,000' time blows mine away with mine being 10.0 seconds, and ofcourse your 1/4 mile ET as well as your trap speed being superior to mine. so with all this info that the timeslips provide it's obvious that I might give you a good run in the 1/8th mile which is greatly or atleast partly due to my 4.56 gears, and maybe even to a smaller degree my supercharger being of the roots variety, but after that first 1/8th mile, I'm done, and your car conquers!!!!

Good luck with everything my friend. I'm sure you'll get used to your new found power, enough to handle it off the line just fine. you just need some more seat time, that's all. you'll do just fine, and I look forward to hearing more, and also getting a ride in that animal on wheels!!!!

You have one beautiful and awesome car and it sounds great to boot. Driving the MM on a 1/4 is not that easy, I can tell you. There is alot to learn. Your MM is a 10 second car it just takes practice and patience. See you at SSHS5 in November.

Good luck and be safe!

Billy I agree! I just need some practice.

I never appreciated how hard it can be to tighten up the leash on a beast that probably has too much power. There is clearly a knack that I must develop for launching the car. My E/Ts and my trap speed reveal my cars potential. My 60 foot times reveal my personal shortfall. But, it's like I said, the first time I went into Court, I thought I was going to vomit on my opposing counsel's shoes. Now, if I am not in Court, I am just plain bored!! So, I figure I will make a few more trips to the ATL for the purpose of practicing launching and then, watch out!

Also, my friend Mark (FiveO here) and I now have the same tire/wheel combo (slicks) and I will be watching him carefully to see how he improves with the slicks.

I have not yet used my slicks because I lent my wheels (Bogarts) out to my friend Jeff who was busy making 12 second passes on his wife's daily driver. Man I love that guy. He helped me set up my car on Thursday, and then drive home the trailer (a 2 hour drive) and swapped 31 spline axles into his wife's car and drove back the next day to be with me. How cool is that?

Marty you have no idea how glad I am to see you smiling and enjoying the fruits of your labor, enjoy your car and don't worry too much about being the fastest. That may come, and even if it doesn't; I know first hand what a truly unique ride you have. Remember that if all you wanted was the fastest and no more, that would have been easy....don't add any weight, right ?

Drive your car Marty, make it truly your own and enjoy it, as I do when I read of your adventures. Some will read about your horsepower and have certain expectations of how fast it should be....do not let that ever discourage you, those that know you and your car and what you have created understand...you are blessed in many ways, not the least of which is having such a fine friend as Todd.

Enjoy life and keep us posted.:D

Vomit and VHT traction compound don't mix.;)

.....but seriously, I look forward to the day when you get the tuning issues all cleared up, and you can bring that thing up north already, and start practicing up here where I can watch. :)

Marty, Did you ever change out the block with an iron block? Or with your wallet titanium? I can't imagine that the aluminum block would be strong enough to handle that many horses.

We used an aluminum block, but it is a lot beefier than the stock piece. It is amazing what some of the hi-po aluminum pieces are rated at. Sean Hyland sells one that is rated at 2,500 hp!

I'd like to echo Martin's thoughts, without interrupting the train of thought.

Having just built a new "forged" engine for my MM, I spent a lot of time researching the need for a fresh, and stronger block. The stock MM block is quite durable, and while there are a few "improved" options on the market, anyone wanting to build a performance engine should decide on a final goal first. I wasn't planning on building power anywhere near as stout as Marty's, and for the mild power I had in mind, my stock MM block was more than adequate. Truth is, when you're doing stuff like this, it's way too easy to spend money. There's not just one "top drawer" to shop from.

Modular Performance used a Mountaineer Aluminum Block for my forged DOHC engine project...they said that those blocks were a more stout casting than the Marauder block.
I had them add a DSS main cap support and ARP studs as some added insurance...It'll be ready for some serious rpm...and eventually some serious boost!
