View Full Version : Header - Cobra Manifold - exhaust sound.

I recently installed the Cobra Manifolds and am really happy with the performance.
I notice when I floor it I now hear through the exhaust pipes a ticking. It is on both sides, but mostly on drivers side.
We checked for exhaust leaks and can't find any.
Is this sound normal for these manifolds?
Thanks,
Paul

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me. Did you use a stethoscope to try to track the point of origin of the sound?

yes, used a stethascope.
Maybe it is coming from EGR tube. I will get a real etension made.

If the EGR tube is not set in properly and tighten up real well, you will get the ticking and it is a nasty sound. Can you tell if the ticking sound is coming from the passenger side?

It sounds like it is coming from Drivers side where EGR tube is.
When installing Manifolds, we were not prepared to extend EGR tube, so the muffler shop found an old EGR tube, cut off 2" at both ends and welded them together to make the 4" extgension. Also had to use old hardware. My guess is that I need to re-do the 4" extension.
Where can I get that done?

Hey, Paul, congrats on your install. I've had DR's Cobra prototypes in place since 9/'03, no ticking as you describe. Did you reuse the factory gaskets? I did, but others here who replaced them reported poor sealing and leaks with new gaskets. You may have to loosen up and reseat the manifolds.

Mac -
I did reuse the OEM gaskets.
I think the problem is with the EGR tube which had to be extended.
How did you extend your tube?

However, the DR kit should have come with a fresh 1/2" inch brass compression ring for the EGR pipe, and installing this ring is a one-time shot. Screw it up, and you'll need to try again with a fresh ring. It's best to fix the ring in place with some sticky stuff, like form-a-gasket, and then tighten things down. If you get it wrong, you should start over with a fresh ring, and they are commonly available for pennies at any hardware store. It's a standard 1/2" brass compression ring for copper tubing. Hope this helps solve your problem.

When Dennis was selling the SVO Shorties he included in the kit a ready made egr tube extension, maybe he can hook you up.

When I had my turbo installed on my Impala I had new headers installed and I did have ticking. The ticking is an exhaust leak most likly - at least it was for me. Hope you find it!

Paul, I know this is probably no help now, but the Cobra manifold kit should have come with that extension...mine did...along with the ferrule Mac mentioned.
I'd suggest calling Dennis about it, maybe it was just inadvertently left out (unless you didn't get them from Dennis in the first place)...

If my memory serves me right, The EGR extension is handled by using a specific Ford part. I will try and find the part number for you. I had to buy one for my Cobra shorty headers to make it fit right.

Glenn,
Did you ever find out what the part number was?

I developed a leak within weeks of the CORBA manifold installation. My link was from the passenger side were a small gasket ( not the manifold gasket) was used between x-pipe connection.

I'd like some more info on the EGR tube modification needed, please.
With the Cobra manifolds not the shorties.

When I had LTs put on my Cobra, Lidio mentioned that they do create a sound similar to a leak. Its not quite a tick. Its more of a ffffft. And, it doesn't occur while idling or reving the engine and I can only hear it inside. I looked for a leak and fixed some small ones. But, it still does it.

Mac, since I'm having the work done local, and not going thru DR, I'd prefer not asking him for "free" help. I don't feel right about that.
I'd like him to get back to me on his air to air setup though.
