After seeing the post about the stripped Marauder for sale at AutoTrader.com, and it looked like my DTR, it made me think about some ways to secure my baby. Looking for all comments on this subject.

Thanks,

David

Anything Viper or DEI related will be a quality alarm. Starts out at little over a hundred and up depending on features.

This is on my to-do list as a matter of fact as I want a Viper alarm (I have always used Viper in the past) that cranks the car, rolls up/down the windows, etc.

I want that system out of Naked Gun...I think its the one where he breaks out of Prison, is that 33 1/3? anyways when the guy puts the slim jim past the window a clamp comes out from under the car and grabs his nuts.

A friend of mine has the top end Viper system. He speaks very highly of it, but he dropped around $700 on the system including install. >ouch<

I have the Viper model 790 (It's several years old now) but it was the top model 2 way alarm/starter at the time. Mine has the doors/trunk monitored, shock sensor, starter kill, power door lock/unlock, power trunk release and remote start.

It works well, range isn't too bad. The handiest feature is the 2 way paging. Your remote will tell you if the car is started, door left open, alarm going off...etc.

This is the 3rd car this alarm has been in and I wouldn't use anything but Viper/DEI.

But, if someone really wants to steal your car, they will, no matter what alarm you've got in it. :(

I am actually taking mine in on Monday for a a Viper alarm with auto-start and two-way paging. I think it's the 3.5 model. I found a good guy locally and total will be $550 and includes pickup and delivery of the car.

Originally I had no intention of doing this, but am taking my car down to south of San Diego in June and have heard horror stories about the car theft down there. It doesn't help that the Tijuana Chief of Police and all his officers are driving stolen American SUV's around their s(*thole town. Every cop down there is a damned thief.

My brother in law had his work truck and all his tools stolen along with 2 grand in cash at a hotel in San Diego. He was worried about carrying that much cash around, so rolled it up and stuffed it way up under the dash into the wiring harness of his truck. They are probably still driving the truck around with the cash stuffed up in there and no one the wiser!

It's expensive, but the peace of mind will be worth it I think.

Regards,

Norm

There are several threads on the various anit theft systems. Search around. My favorite is the satellite tracking via the internet. You can watch the car on a map cruise around in real time. The down side is internet access the moment you realize the car is gone.

Keep in mind if they want your car, they will get it! The blinking light on your dash board and pats system is a deterant already. If this system is defeted, they are intent on getting your car!

You want the best? A multilayered defense is best:

PATS system
fancy system w/ siren
LoJack
Internet satellite monitoring

In that order.

Some cars are simply put on a flatbed and towed away. Nothing to prevent that :(

Your right Mark, but considering how much $$ we dump into our cars (I dont have to tell you that), a little more insurance is a good idea. I am looking into the satillite tracking option. Geo fencing, real time and speed monitoring, etc... I like the options that are available.

Isn't this something so that the insurence companys can use against you in case of an accident as well as any of those other monitoring systems?

No. Thats the black box your thinking of. In the event of an accident the computer saves the last 5 seconds of the vehicles last moments in operation, i.e.; the brakes were on, car skidding, steering wheels turned to the right. Most new cars have that now.

HAHA, no really, that was me!

The black box in the police cars are on the top of the tranny hump under the rug. I am not sure about the MMs but they are probably in the same spot.

Did not all MM come with a factory installed alarm? My MM has one and I was wondering if ya'll think they work. I usually prefer a factory installed alarm than an aftermarket alarm unless it is a really good one like Viper. Keep it or change it to Viper?

Thanks

It's alright I guess. Since we dont hear about alot of MMs being stolen, it must be ok. But if the bad guy wants it, he'll get it. The only way to get it back is some sort of tracking device.

An alarm w/ a siren is only a deterent.

I forgot something..

I great deterent is glass etching. You can have your VIN or any other phrase (Your MM.Net ID??) etched into the glass. The more personal (permanant) markings, the easier for police to ID your car on the road.

Any type of "security" only keeps the honest people honest. Anyone that wants your ride will find a way to take it. Make it a habit to always lock the doors (even in your own driveway / garage), keep valuables out of sight (if they don't see it, they don't want it), install wheel locks (yeah they're easily removed but if the car next to you doesn't have them, his wheels are gone not yours), tint the windows - harder to see what's inside. If you make it hard or time consuming for a thief he'll look for an easier mark.... Yep that's right Mr. Thief take the Lincoln Markx over there, leave my MM alone..... :D
