What sort of communications do you use on the road when cruzin. When I took the trip to Nashville with the local Mustang club, we were using the family service radios, some had CB's (great for keeping up on traffic and the radar traps) and cell phones (not always in service).
I am planing on installing a CB for those frequent trips to NY. I have an old Cobra family service radio with crappy range. Should I upgrade?

Several of us in the CAM group use FRS radios, channel 5. :D
I have been thinking about this one

The FRS radio (2way radios) would be cool if they came in a mobile mount (like the car CB radios do), and not just the handheld design.
I did a search for mobile FRS units, but all I could find were handhelds. Anyone know of any Mobile FRS units?

Some have the VOX feature that allows hand free use, voice activated transmit.

Get a HAM ticket and forget about CB radio. On the 2M ham band, 144 - 148MHz you can use a 50W FM rig, not to mention there are open repeaters everwhere in the country. The radios are inexpensive, and small, as are the antennas, plus they have better coverage than your cop radios, Charlie.

Been there, done that with the HAM stuff, and a GMRS license with a repeater on the roof of the Sears Tower. I had coverage from downtown Milwaukee to downtown Peoria and all points in between. Even had my car stolen just for the rig inside, a Motorola SyntorX 9000, along with a pair of Yeasu portables in the 450-470 range. Damn, I loved that stuff, only to find it on a table at a HAM fest just two weeks later. Even got myself an Award of Merit from the DEA for recovering some of their stolen digital dual band scrambled crap as well. That's a whole different technology, and a lifestyle all it's own. If you're looking for a new life that will consume your time like your Marauder and this web site, go for it. I'm a refugee from all that crap. That said...
When I travel OTR, I carry a Radio Shack TRC-241 hand held CB transceiver with one-button instant channel 19 and all 7 nationwide NOAA weather channels, with alarms. It's only 5 watts TX, but it's receiver is strong enough to pull in what going on 1 mile ahead (and behind) in CB trucker traffic, without an external antenna. Batteries are good for 18+ hours of receive, and I cannot tell y'all how many times the weather 411 has paid off. When sky above you turns purple, it's nice to get the real skinny on why, just ask anyone who came to Cleveland back in '04 for the Second Annual Regional meet, and took cover "under water" in a retired submarine...WhooWhee baby! That was one hell of a flash front!
I also carry two Motorola T5920 FRS/GMRS hand held transceivers, one to toss to a friend when needed. 22 channels, 99 codes, I set them up for Channel 5 in the clear. Again, battery life exceeds 18 hours, perfect for a day's driving OTR. Seems a lot of truckers and road traffic have moved up to the higher GMRS freaks from CB-19, so, between the two, I feel I'm getting the 411 I need to hear.
I'm considering adding a multiple band in-dash scanner. I don't need to talk back anymore, just listen in today. But, I need to find something that works without external antennas. I'll let y'all know if I find something cool, and discrete.

Cherokee AH-100 AM/SSB up in the free band ranges along with RadioShack 19-1201 Business Band rig programmed into the MURS frequencys...I had GMRS but it was going the way of AM CB so I suggest looking into MURS because of the flooding on FRS/GMRS. Also use scanner discretely mounted even though its okay to use a mobile...PM me for ideas and thoughts as this is also a hobby of mine...
