View Full Version : Nearly lost my MM tonight...

Had to go back to work tonight at 10pm to fix a PC (don't ask.. have the user from hell who complains like a MoFo all the way to the owner of the company... so I have to prep a new machine for her...) ANYWAY... at 2am, I send a spiteful email to the Owner, CEO, and my boss and take off.

Hop up on I-35, mindful of drunks and other twits on the road at 2am, and I'm about 2 car lengths behind and 1 lane to the left of a Mazda 626, when I notice the driver's door open... I think "Oh, crap, Drunky McDriver's going to lose his cookies on the freeway" so I look to my left - crud, boxed in by some generic GM product. I figure the only way to avoid the inevitable is to plant the go pedal down... I just speed up by about 10mph, and I'm at about their rear quarterpanel when they decide the proper thing to do is to hit the concrete wall on the right of their lane. (The far right lane is a ramp to Highway 183, and rises up.) The rebounding 626 is then propelled directly back at me, aimed right for my passenger side rear door. I figure that I have about 1/2 a second, and I just planted the throttle to the firewall.

Bless the gods of accelleration!!! The Mazda passed behind me, fishtailing all over the road, somehow missing the generic GM unit who must have also punched it - and ends up going back to the right - and smacked into the wall he had most recently careened off of.

There was a gathering of Police cars about 1/4 mile back - working a wreck / abandoned car... I saw them moving towards the scene... I was a bit shaken, but luckily unscathed.

I had figured that my '03 MM would be getting me INTO trouble, not keep me out of it. Tomorrow I'm going to wash her and clean her out - and apply my Maguire's NXT to her. Maybe she deserves some Zaino for keeping me alive and well. :bows:

How fast were you travelling when this dufus opened his door to :puke: ?? I think that I would have come off the accelerator real quick and give him a wide berth figuring he was gonna veer out of his lane at any second. Glad you came out of this incident unscathed ... you were indeed fortunate. :D

Once in the collective, Mercury Marauder owners tend to nail the go pedal rather than throwing out the anchor. :D

Glad to hear you made it through without a scratch.

Here's to your :drive: skills.

Maybe ......... depends on where I figure my best chances are. I have nailed it to get past duffei in the past. But, here it looks like a wreck was imminent and he was 2 carlengths behind and to the left of this fool. You might not have had the 2 seconds to make the pass. :burnout: In this case, he did --- but just barely as the guy went right first and passed behind him. I guess you had to be there to make the call based on speed and conditions. This is what's known as experience. :D

'DUFFEI'.......That's a new term Charlie! I like it! It applies to at least 50% of the driver's on the Beltway & I-95... :drive:

Txkent,
Glad to hear that you and your MM were unscathed by the 'dufus'!

The main reason I didn't want to slow down was that I really wanted to be as far away from this as possible... :) After all is said - everything worked out.

I'd say he was doing 55, probably slowed down to 50. I had just entered the freeway, and was moving about 60.
