While draining my anti-freeze I looked at the power steering fluid reservoir for the first time and noticed that the fluid level is just a hair above the minimum mark. What goes in there? Mercon ATF? Mercon V ATF? Does it make any difference?

It's in the Owners Manual. "Mercon ATF"

The owners manual is a good source for answers. It should be read cover to cover before operating anything you buy or before coming here to ask questions. :coolman:

I used Mercon-V, it's not a big deal. the PS system is just a hydraulic pump of sorts. Mercon-V contains some add'l Friction Modifiers but it is not considered a HIGHLY friction modified or EXTREMELY friction modified ATF like Chrysler's ATF+3 (Group II basestocks at min) and ATF+4 (Group III basestocks at min).
Then you have Amsoil ATF which claims to meet a whole slew of ATF specs which does not make sense.
Amsoil ATF claims to meet:
# GM DEXRON II®, DEXRON III
# Ford MERCON®, MERCON V
# Chrysler ATF+ through ATF+4®
Even though ATF+3 and ATF+4 are highly friction modified ATF specs, much more so than Dex III, Mercon, and Mercon-V. At least they have the sense to not include Type F which has very low Friction modifiers.
Anyhow......
back to the thread topic, use a full synthetic ATF or a Group III synthetic.
Mobil 1 ATF is readily available at around $3-$4/qt, all you need is about 1-2 qt to swap out the original fluid.
