I wacked my RF in a pot hole ( not quite a "Grand Canyon" but freakin' close") 2 days ago and was scared to death that I had bent a rim. Thank goodness there are sidewalls on these thngs! 20's with rubber that would fit correctly would have left me changing a flat and getting a rim repaired.
Sometimes you have to live and drive in the real world.

OK, since everyone else has failed to set the youngin's straight......
This automobile was designed very specifically, and has phenominal capabilitys. If the engineers thought the MM required 20's, they would have put them on it. They didn't! And doing so does nothing but degrade the performance of the vehicle. Big wheels is something kids have been doing for years......

(actually it used to be 13's with the wrong offsets-remember those?, sticking 4 inches out of the wheel wells)
:puke:

It may LOOK appealing, but at high speed maneuvers, watch them fail, better get lifetime balancing when you buy them.....Lets keep the 20's and larger on autos intended for pimpin' and whatnot. Navigators, Hummers, Rice buggies, and anything else a basketball player might drive.

(Pro-basketball...)

When is the last time you saw 20's at the dragstrip, stockcar, nascar, or even formula one? Never, cause it wasn't meant to be.

This has got to be what he is talking about. It's a drawing for gods sake. And if you go on to read, the writer even states that Ford will go with a smaller wheel IF it went into production. The big wheels look appealing in the DRAWING, not in reality!

20 inch wheels are for ricers. The 18 inch on the MM are sufficient. John

WTF? I don't understand why you guys keep saying that twenty inch wheels are for ricers! how the hell do you come up with that conclusion? I said this before in a previous post, Ive seen plently of imports with 18's as well hmmmmm.. the MM also has 18's that must make all of you MM owners ricers too.

Its ok if it doesn't match yours. You asked, you got some answers.
We all play pretty well together here even when we disagree. Come back often. We like you SS guys too. Its all about cars......thats why they make more than one flavor.

Sorry Jesse, not a ricer, but, I did have Rice Krispies for breakfast.:D
Seriously, another vote against 20's. Too tall, IMHO.
But, if it's your car put 24.5 tractor trailer tires on if you want to.
To each his own.

My main reason for NOT putting anything with more wheel on the MM is the roads, if you can call them that, here on Long Island. If you put something with so little sidewall on your ride around here it is only a matter of when, not if, a chuckhole the size of Kansas eat your tire/wheel/control arms/shock/strut/fender.

The roads around here are a pile of stinkin doody!!!! (there, now the foulmouth filter wont get set off)

I have witnessed Yugos disappearing from site into expansion cuts on the L.I.E. , only to reappear on the service road............

Extreme plus sizes just don't make good sense for me. i need to drive on roads that get cared foor VERY badly. I could see cracking a rim very easily on a set of 20".

Don't forget 20s are expensive. The wheels are expensive and so are the tires. Marketing drives wheels size mostly. They consider cost of ownership too. Replacing tire(s) is part of the cost of ownership.

You are correct that 20s can degrade performance. They're heavier which will require larger brakes and potentially a beefed up suspension. They'll wear out bushings, ball joints, and bearings quicker. On the other hand, with reduced sidewall, they will seem quicker in the turn.

Like the others have said, sidewall is your friend.

I don't buy the 20's are for ricers argument, after all you can buy a brand new dodge ram with 20's from the factory .... not to mention the Ford F150 Harley Davidson edition (can't get much more ANTI-ricer than HD, now can you?)

That said, I personally would not go with 20's on an MM. Their too heavy and would hurt ALL performance areas (there is no WORSE place to add weight to a car than UNSPRUNG ROTATING MASS, yuck!) Plus, as others have pointed out, it just does not leave enough sidewall ... looks silly on this car IMHO. Of course, I don't like our stock wheels (PLEASE don't call them rim's, a rim is the outer portion of a spoked wheel) either. Too flashy. I'd prefer four of the factory spares (just plain silver thanks) myself.

Bottom line though, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (except the pontiac aztek/chevy avalance, those are just irrefutably ugly!)

I think 20's look good on some cars. But who cares? The only person caring should be the person behind the wheel driving it.

I'm going to get mad flak for putting hydros on a '62 Impala around here. I can hear the haters now. But I don't care. It's my car, I paid for it, I'll do what the heck I want with it.

Agreed.

Don't Escalades come with a fancy 20 or 22" wheel? To me they are ugly but if it is what someone wants...

I don't think anyone around here is going to give you mad flak for putting hydros on a '62 Impala. A little ribbing in fun maybe though ;)

I never thought of myself as an artist. I never really liked the Leadfoot screen name and eventually got tired of it. Warpath just popped in my head one day.

Anyway, the ricer argument isn't necessarily based on 20s. It should be stated that ricers max out wheel size and minimize sidewall. I've see 22s on a Dodge status. If you want to go for broke, graduate to 26s. They're available now.
