My rear tires are down to the wear bars,I am headed to ST.Louis 300+ mi. to race in the World Ford Challenge.Am I going to be better off traction wise with worn down tires or change them before I leave?thanks for any help.
They still ride fine!EDIT:
Called the tire shop, service Mgr. was very helpful, pointed out something I did not weigh heavily enough "You want to get there in one piece?":o
Off to the tire store!

My tires are getting down to the wear bar too - but since I'll be hooking up the Trilogy soon, no sense it ruining new tires - I want to play first :)

You could always purchase the tires you want now, and then put them on somewhere down there if you decide you don't like the ride. Granted, it would be difficult to try and find a place, but it's kind of like having your cake and eating it too ;)

The track slicks don't have traction/treads because they want the most surface area on the tire to come in contact with the track. I'm sure that theory applys to streets tires used on the track too - but street tires are made of a different material, and so therefore I don't know if it still applys technically.

Anyone?

I personally would not drive my Marauder on a road trip with worn tires. IMO the negatives out way the positives.

^^^what jgc(etc) said^^^

Especially in the rain. Tires worn more than half-way are much more prone to hydro-planing...

One thing I enjoy is worn tires in the rain. Gives me a chance to practice control a little.

But, for a road trip, I would buy new.

Worn tires won't help you much at the strip. In autocross and road racing however, it is common to buy new tires and send them out to have the tread ground down. The grinder leaves 3/32 of tread. This results in less squirming of the tread blocks and more predictable handling. In drag racing, since all of the forces are in one direction, it probably doesn't matter as much.

Hey Brad, if your question is about the OEM BFG's, mine gripped a lot better when new, when I got to the wear indicators I could never hook up on a hard launch and I have a stock power train, so my advise is go with new sticky rubber.:D

Merc,

I am not at home so can't post a picture....

Wear bars can be seen in the tread grooves. Look into the tread grooves and you will see lateral bars (raised rubber bar)..... as your tires wear down...these bars will finally become level with the treadface.... you will still have some depth to your tread groove... but the bars will key you that your tires need replacement.
