The IndipalaSS club (94 to 96 Impala SS and GM B-bodys) is holding a drag race on Sunday, June 5th at the Muncie, Indiana Dragway (around 40 miles NE of Indianapolis, IN). We are having heads up racing in two classes (essentially naturally aspirated and power adder) for vehicles weighing 4,000 lbs and more. We are also having ET bracket racing for everyone else (any weight or make vehicle). For those of you that have attended the Super Heavy Shootout in Atlanta, GA each November, this is the first similar race to be held in the Midwest. As with the Atlanta race, the participation of the Blue Oval crowd (Lincolns and Marauders) would add much to the excitement of the event. As this is the first attempt at a Midwest venue, we are hoping for enough support to make this an annual event. If we draw at least 70 vehicles, we will be awarding cash prizes!! For more details, please visit www.IndipalaSS.org (http://www.IndipalaSS.org). and click on the link to the event. It would be great to see you there.

That should be about right. Maybe 31/2 to 4 hours tops for non-drag racers.:) By the way, if there is a better way to get the word out about this event on this forum, let me know. I have visited here before (and I have this site bookmarked), but I don't know my way around this forum like I do the Impala SS forum.

Keep in mind fellas that their cars are atleast 9 years old already :surprise: atleast the V8 ones, so finding one that has been unmodded in any way is very rare.

Holy mackerel; a 10 sec. barge! You gotta love it.

'Course, if it's an old coot like me, with 2sec RT's starting in second gear, any old MM will smoke it.

This sounds like fun, but it's another Sunday off for me and I'm not sure I can swing that, so, it's a pencil-in right now. But, I love the idea.

Anyone from Chicagoland want to caravan in?

From the Chicagoland area, get to Indiana any way you want and get southbound on I-65. At State Route 28 (Frankfort exit) make a left and head eastbound on SR 28 to Albany IN, you'll pass by the track, it's on your right.

Anyone from Chicagoland going who want to hook up for the run, post here. I suggest we meet here:

Steak and Shake
720 West 81st Street I-65 & Rt. 30W
Merrillville, IN 46410
219-736-8901

Meet by 7 AM for the run to mercman's location, in Tipton, and he'll be our point man to the track from there.

BTW, I've made it to Dan's home in 3 hours, door to door.

Yep...I do Gary, and I still feel the welt, which is exactly why I feel we sould try and make this heads up match.

They caught us off guard almost a year ago, maybe we could snooker them now? I'm sure willing to try, and having them clean our clocks is one thing, but giving them the right time of day is quite another. They asked, we should answer, and I'll do what I can to get my butt there.

Indy was a wake up call,Thats all.You got to remember 99% of or guys are still making payments on there Marauders and about that many haven`t been down the 1320 in years so reaction times were not so good plus the Impala`s have better low end torque.Only two of the Impala`s ran in the bracket racing and they were the ones that run at the strip alot. The `03 SS Ran 13teens so I could have been beat. The other Impala`s were built plus they had some weight removed on there cars plus 10years of experence and knowing the car gave them an edge.Remember FiveO won his class at the heavyweight shootout in Hotlanta last year so thats one we got back. :D

I don't know about everyone, but I just think its a hell of a lot of fun to drag race a 4-door 4,000 lb+ supersized sedan. I know when I mention this to my friends and they find out what I'm racing with, they think I'm a bit nuts. But if this is insanity, put me in the loony bin. With a little modification, our big luxo-boats can more than hold their own. So why not take them to the track every once in a while?

As for "winning and losing", I know I'm probably going to lose at some point in the day. I also know there are plenty of Marauders that can clean my clock, ...but so-what. If I'm having fun, improving my drag-racing skills and making new friends, thats all that really matters to me. There will always be cars faster and drivers much better than I am.

Regardless, I believe all of us guys (and gals) that race large, 4-door, rear wheel drive "hot rods" (be they Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Chevy, Buick, Cadillac or whatever) are all part of the same family. Perhaps a crazy, dysfunctional family, but family nontheless. And as far as I'm concerned, the more often we can all get together and "party", the better.

Starting to sound like a planning party for Excuse Central. Way I see it, it's an invite from friends with shared interest, so, why not? Still can't say I can make it, but I'd like to hear from someone who wants to go, not the folks who want to stay away.

It's just racing, and it's just for fun. Yesterday (5/28) Zack and I brought the only Marauder to a private Mustang party at US 41. We got along with everyone there, met some great folks, and got help when needed when my battery died. This is what's it's about, folks, now who wants to have some fun with the Bowties?

I'll be there. Just got done last evening fitting my 90mm MAF to a new hybrid air intake. Part JLT, part K&N :D

Upper part to the throttle body is JLT and the lower part and cone filter with heat shield is K&N.

Thanks to Jay Tucker for sending me the right parts to fit it all together!

New upgraded fuel pump and dyno tune at Lidio's next friday. 1/2 a cow at Capers on Friday night, a relaxing Saturday and drive to Muncie and I'll see everyone at the track next Sunday!

SSHS4 was great. The Impala people put on a great show and were top notch. I can't wait for the 5th!

There is one KEY advantage that the Impala guys will always have....CUBIC INCHES!!!

They start with a 69 cid advantage, and can easily drop in a 383 stroker, or even BIGGER small block V8 with NO problem PLUS they can add a blower just as easy as we can.

We have awesome 4 valve cylinder heads, but they can buy great aluminum cylinder heads cheap and get LOTS of flow through 2 valves...

If Ford had installed a 5.0 small block into the Marauders we would have NO problems upgrading to a 331, 347, 393, 408, or even 454 small block Ford!
The absolute maximum modular V8 possible is @ 360 cid....

Don't get me wrong, I love the 'little' 281 modular and am VERY suprised at how fast members are getting their Marauders to run....

I don't get too upset by the Impala guys running so fast, they are just as dedicated to modifying and upgrading their heavy 4 doors as we are,
and they start with a 1 LITER advantage.

The best thing about the Marauder is WHUPPIN' UP on somebody with our teeny little V8s... :D ;)

We have a large group of Marauders that meet in Central FL. Do you know someone from your FL sector that you can put me in touch with? Maybe we can get together with them. My Son is selling his Monte SS and looking to purchase an Impala SS or Camaro SS......Should be nice.

Hey MaLo03, there is a big contingent of Impala SS owners and a strong club presence in Florida. One of the largest is Sofasst. If you go to www.impalassforum.com (http://www.impalassforum.com), there are club listings by state. There are many serious racers and some very fast Impalas in Florida. Many of them head up to the Southern Super Heavy Shootout the first weekend in November at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. (this year will be the fifth such race). There were a number of Marauders there last year that ran well.

Rider90, after re-reading my own post, you have a point. It probably does appear like I'm trying to reel you guys in. Sorry, I should know better than to post at 3:00 AM when the mind is fuzzy. But I do think it is enjoyable to race against similar size and weight competition. This is our club's first attempt at holding a race similar to the SSHS race in Atlanta. We need a strong showing of participants to make this an annual event. Muncie, Indiana has got to be closer and more doable than Atlanta, GA for many of you.

I know the Marauders are starting at a disadvantage due to cubic inches. That is why Marauders running in the 11's is probably comparable to Impalas running in the tens. They all impress me as the fastest I've ever run is in the high 13's.

Just a quick reminder. Sunday, June 5th at Muncie Dragway, Muncie Indiana. Gates open at 10:00 AM. Test & Tune from 10:30 AM till 1:00 PM, lunch break and then racing starts at 2:00 PM. Remember, we are on Eastern Standard Time in Indiana (at least till next April) so we are on the same time as Central Daylight. If you are coming from Ohio, Michigan, or points east, you get an extra hour of sleep before driving to the track. It should be a heavyweight battle unmatched since the "Thrilla in Manilla" (if you're old enough to know what that is in reference to). Hope to see you there.

And it don't rain in Indianapolis (or Muncie) in the summertime, well springtime, well at least till late afternoon. Thanks Nathan and FiveO for coming to our little drag race last Sunday. You both have beautiful (and fast) Marauders. It was definitely a little hot but at least we didn't have any rain during the event. I'm sorry I didn't get around more to just bull**** with you guys but with the tech inspection and racing my car, and just doing some odd jobs during the event, I didn't get around much. I hope you guys had a good time. Turnout was light and the club took a pretty big hit in the pocketbook but I'm still hoping we can continue this next year. I will be watching this site and I hope we can hook up and race again during the summer somewhere in the Midwest (not just November in Atlanta). Keep me posted if you are organizing anything through your Marauder clubs where us Chevy boys would be welcome. By the way, when the wife's Buick croaks, I'm hoping to be able to add a Marauder to our fleet (She gets my Buick daily driver, I get the Marauder).

I know the Marauders are starting at a disadvantage due to cubic inches. That is why Marauders running in the 11's is probably comparable to Impalas running in the tens. And that's precisely why Marauders should be given a handicap of some kind at these Impala outings, since the weight of these two types of cars is the same, but there's a 70 cubic inch deficet. But I've yet to hear of any handicap given at this Impala event.

There was one event at Englishtown in New jersey a couple years ago when the Marauders first came out that pitted the Marauders & Crown Vics against the Impala boys, and I remember it said in the advertisement for it that Marauders & Crown Vics were allowed one power adder, and Impalas were not allowed any unless there were some Marauders there that had two power adders, because of the engine displacement difference. I forget who was puting on that event, but ever since people found out how good Marauders are running at the tracks( especially because they run better than crown Vics do w/the same level of mods), nobody wants to give them that handicap anymore, and I for one think that the deck has since been stacked against us at these events because of that(particularly for the heads-up racing).

Let me point out, that I'm not usually even interested in contemplating taking my only car to race in a state that's 12+ hours away. The furthest that I ever go to race is new jersey, and I raced the Impala SS guys there in 2003. And that's only because there aren't any drag strips in my homestate. But I'm bringing this issue up to alert my fellow Marauder owners to it. Why do you think merely four Impala SS cars mopped the track with all of the Marauders last year? It's because w/out a handicap for the Marauders, the deck is stacked against them, and that's what the Impala boys LUV. Most of them know this. Which is the reason for the quote above. Atleast "INXSS" has been somewhat honest about it. But some Impala owners will not be, even though they know it's true.

races should be as follows(especially heads-up races and/or the finals):

Imapala w/out power adders -VS- Marauders & CV's w/one power adder

Impala w/one power adder -VS- Marauders & CV's w/two power adders

Bone stock Impala w/choice of gears-VS- MM's & CV's w/out power adders

I was at a local track, on the opening Weekendat Greatlakes Dragaway Union Grove in Wisconsin.
I spoke to a fellow there who was pushing his Impala SS in the stageing lanes.I did offer to help him push his car.
That is how the Weight topic came up.
He was complaining about how difficult it was to push his Impala, by himself.
I asked him how much his car weighs, and he responded, "just under 4000#'s"
I read here that they are almost the same.
I tried to get him to race me, even though, he probably would have beat me.
I still prefer to race a similar tank.
