Okay,
I've seen them on the internet as low as $79/ea.
I'm also interested in swapping out the OEM mufflers for the FlowMasters.
With as many people that have done this, I am surprised
that there isn't a HOW TO ... :(
Is this a simple cut out and replace installation, or
does it require a torch to do it ?
I've asked my dealer if they could do the job for me, and the Service Manager started twitching...
He said if it was a simple out with the old, in with the new, it was no problem.
If the exhaust required anything extra, I'd have to provide it
since they have no way of modifying anything.
And I going the wrong route ?
Should I really seek a Muffler Shop for this work ?
Marty ?? LOL

Buy the mufflers...$79 is a good price, and take them to a muffler shop. They should charge about $40 for each. Ask your dealer who they use to do exhaust. The old ones are cut off and the new ones are welded in. good luck.

Wot he said. Unless you can weld and/or have a friend with a welding unit, go to a muffler shop. Even then, I'd still go to a muffler shop, since they have those stand-off thingies that hold the pipes while you weld.
Too bad you are in NY, cause I know of a good muffler shop. :)

Take it to a good muffler shop. Ask around at cruise-ins, car shows for recommendations.

I agree, Muffler Shop, They usually use Mig welders, so NO sparks flying.
and if you need a little tweek or two in the pipes you're right there. Probably in and out in less than 1 hr. assumming no wait when you get there..

Just got the flows put on mine a few weeks back. I went to the local 'performance' muffler shop that does mainly collector, drag, and otherwise performance cars.
I'm sure every town has a shop like this if you don't want the same ole muffler master to monkey with it.
It puts my mind at ease seeing nice fixed up mustangs and Impala's at the shop when I dropped it off instead of a beater truck and 86 Buick that may be on the rack at the usual muffler shop.

If I may suggest, before you jump on E-bay check with a shop like
twolow found. I had such a shop install my Flowmasters for $220
parts, labor and tax. This way you will avoid the hassle of ordering parts one place and having them installed in another.
If something croaks somewhere you won't be caught in the middle.
Look for a place that seems to do a lot of Mustangs.
I have 12k on mine and believe me, they are mellow. It took at least
6K Before they really "broke in."
Good luck, you're gonna love 'em.
Let a professional handle the install...find a shop that cares about what the underside of your car looks like AND performs like.
Too bad you're not near the A-T-L....I'd hook you up tomorrow....and you'd be happy (although I'm not a big fan of Flows on the Marauder...as I tell my customers....exhaust sound is like preferences in music...some like more treble...some like more bass...)

I have Flowmaster original 40's, along with the delete tips and I absolutely love the way the combo sounds. I had mine installed while I was at Lidio's a month ago.

My Flowmasters are "Too Loud". I also have the aftermarket (Flowmaster?) exaust TIPS.
1. Is my understanding correct, that the stock tips are in fact Resonators that help quiet the exaust? If true, I think that would be perfect for my car. (Just slightly quieter).
2. If (1) above is correct, I may have to go to a muffler shop to see if they have anything they can stick into the aftermarket tips to help quiet it down.

I bought a set of flowmasters for my mustang back in the 80's and they were great for the three months in the summer. Drove my car sparingly in the winter and I mostly parked it in my dad's unheated garage. In less then 2 months my flowmasters rotted out and I had holes in them. I called flowmaster and they advised me that because I live in Chicago they would not warranty them as after all their is salt here in the winter! :nono:
If you dont plan on driving your car in the winter and you can store it in a heated garage they should be great. If you drive your car sparingly in the winter then you have to watch out for the water/condensation build up which will rot them right off and you will be sol!:shake:
I finally found a great set of Dynomax mufflers alot cheaper that lasted me over 3 years. They also had a deeper sound and were fantastic.

1 Bad Merc, Nice reply and thank you for the information. In case anyone bring's his date into mind, "80's" I just wanted to throw in my .02 cents...I have a friend with a 94 Chevy 1500 2WD that has had flowmasters on it from day one. He has no other vehicle, it has racked up 200,000 miles already, and he had to have the muffler replaced in the time period of about 5 years - thats how long those mufflers lasted him in every day driving rain/ice/summer etc...
Like I said, just throwing in my side of the story. I am not disagreeing with you at all.
Carry on!

I just looked at the FlowMaster site. They have the 40 Delta series in T409 stainless. Don't know how things are in Yonkers, but up here in snow country mufflers that are not stainless will not last very long.

Todd installed Magnaflows on my MM and I couldn't be happier. They are deeper and richer, but don't bring loudness into the cabin. You can definitely hear them outside, though. BTW, he also had the shop make me 2.5 " stainless from the cats back through a custom x-pipe, into the Magnaflows and then attaching to my OEM back section and tips. Great work, and like I said, a deep rich note. :D

Rider 90,
I am sure they lasted him awhile because he drove the truck everyday even in the winter and did not allow any condensation/water to form in them.
My problem was that my 88 Mustang with the big gear, light rearend and centerforce clutch was a pain in the a$$ to drive in the winter so I tried to keep it in the garage with a car cover on it. Because of this, the condensation/water built up and rotted the mufflers from the inside out. At the time, flowmasters were pretty expensive ($300 for a decent set) and when my mufflers did not even last me more then 6 months I got a little ticked off.
When I called flowmaster to complain about how fast they rotted out all I received was laughter and they told me to go scratch. I believe the gentleman told me that because these where high performance mufflers that I should know better then to use them on a car in the Midwest that might get driven in the winter. I remember going around and around with them about this and asked where on the box/instructions did they put this disclaimer. Eventually they just got tired of my arguing and hung up on me.
I am sure alot of guys on this site were like me back then, a 20 something working two jobs and saving up your money to do more mods to your car. That $300 bucks was alot of cash for me back then and it really hurt as I had no money and I had to go and borrow it from my parents. After receiving the lectures about how could I spend my money on stupid hi-performance mufflers (especially when I had perfectly good set of mufflers originally on the car) my dad finally gave in and handed me the money. (I believe my dad finally broke down because he and the neighbors got tired of hearing the loud exhaust as I had ditched the catalytic converters and was running the x-pipe replacement):)
I did a little research the next time and found a great set of Dynomax mufflers for sale that worked and sounded better then the Flowmasters!
After the way I was treated I personally will never buy another product from Flowmaster as long as I live.:nono:
I guess the moral of my story is that if you dont plan on driving your car alot in the winter and keeping those Flowmaster mufflers heated up enough they will build up water/condensation and rot from the inside out. You will be replacing them alot sooner then you expected.
Just my .02:pimp:
