How does our stock rev limiter work?
I have some vague idea that it limits the spark or gas and therefore the engine "slows" down to a safe rpm.
A secondary question is "Isn't cutting the spark or gas similar to detonation and hence bad?"
Thanks jeremy not to exceed 6200 rpm

I thought it just 'released the gas' as if you took your foot off the pedal and then kicked back in after the RPM dropped 500 or so.

How does our stock rev limiter work?
I have some vague idea that it limits the spark or gas and therefore the engine "slows" down to a safe rpm. I'm not postive about factory stock rev limiters, but an aftermarket rev limiter that I used to have on another car limited the rev by preventing the spark from going to the sparkplug of every other cylinder, and then on the next engine revolution, the other four plugs would be denied spark while the previous four that were denied spark would receive it in order to prevent raw unburned gas from building up in the cyliners. And then it would alternate this action for every other engine revolution, and that's what caused the engine to sound like a popcorn machine once the revs reached the limit.
A secondary question is "Isn't cutting the spark or gas similar to detonation and hence bad?" Nope it isn't "bad" because it hasn't anything to do with pinging or detonation. Some people think that cutting off the gasoline momentarily can cause pinging, but I don't believe that's true because whenever your fuel pump fails and the engine cuts out, you don't hear it pinging. And as far as cutting off the spark, that wouldn't cause pinging or detonating either, because you have to have spark for the engine to ping.
Pinging occurs when the gasoline burns too quick, and actually explodes instead of burning like it's supposed to. And that can be caused by a couple different things, but if your engine isn't pinging before you hit the rev limiter while the spark is present, then it isn't going to ping when the rev limiter is activated and there isn't any spark.
Thanks jeremy not to exceed 6200 rpm....................

All EEC V Ford stock rev limiters shut off the fuel a little at a time.Until you lift off the throttle.
For you super charged guys that meens instant LEAN condition and posibley some detonation.
This set up is never good on the engine at high load, but for Ford it's easy and if the driver never lifts the engine will shut down.
The rev limiter BillyGman discribed is known as a "soft touch" rev control in MSD ignition speak and does give that stuttering sound that you may hear from some cars at the drag strip.I have never known of anybody that has hurt an engine with a soft touch.

That is what I was worried about, the leaning out problem if the gas is reduced/shut off.
Also what is EEC V?

Yes, but the engine when overreved with a stock rev limiter can be heard breaking up too. So my guess is that it must also cut off the spark to some extent. I've reved the engine in my Marauder in both first and second gears during burnouts to the extent that I heard it bouncing off the rev limiter plenty of times, so I'm very familiar with that sound. For those who have seen my burnout vid, you can hear in the burnout of the opening scene that this is happening.
