While I had car on lift for Resonators today, I noticed that the driveshaft on this car looked different than driveshafts that I remember from yesteryear. (Thicker). Remembering that you guys have talked about driveshafts in the past, I thought I would ask:
First off, the driveshaft was nice and shiny, like it was polished aluminum. It has three paint marks painted around the shaft. From front to back, they are:
Pink, Green, Green.
Any ideas what the three paint rings mean?

Those are "Running From a Flood" water line marks. When that wall of water chasing you reaches the front most mark, you're a goner.

The colored rings are inspection marks from the factory.
They could also indicate the balance factor too.

I heard that >you< had colored rings painted on a certain shafty body part. Something about knowing when to stop unrolling, wasn't it?

I used to know exactly what these rings (and corresponding dots on the flange and yoke) meant, but I forgot.

Mac at least you remembered that you forgot! And when will ya be turning 101?
Yes, I have.
I have remembered that I forgot, hehehe...And the birthday crap has been remembered by others here.
Ummm...We did all that "birthday" crap this past weekend in Barry's back yard. I got a surprise "unknown birthday" party, with presents, cake, candles I had to blow out, and all that other birthday crap. BTW, "crap" means to me, "stuff". It's just a word in my vocabulary, K? It doesn't mean "*****", it's just means "crap", K? Normal crap, like your wallet, keys, gum, change for the tollroad...Crap. Right?
This surprise is quite sentimental for me, I'm very touched by the effort, and the presentation. Frankly, I never knew (or thought) my MM friends here had been paying any attention to this crap, though I am certain that some board members here do examine every word I post, letter for letter.
Nonetheless, it was all a very delicious event, and a true surprise for me, please look up some of the pics from this event in Barry's gallery? It's one of the many joyous moments we shared during our 3rd Annual Eastern Regional meet. I am humbled by this attention to detail, and I thank everyone involved (and very deeply) from my heart, for all my birthday crap.
So...Now I am officially older here, and as "drunk" as I have ever been among us, and surely as drunk as one member wants me to be. All I can say is thank you all, for my special birthday.
I am sorry if this is the way some folks see me here, but it's not my doing, and those who have met me face to face know the truth. I may be a wild card, but I am sober, and one year older...Now.

Why would I want to stop when they only cover 3/4 of "it" fully unrolled? Oh, I get it. You're saying he's handicapped. Ha, Ha.
Big hands, big feet, big ears, gotta have something going for me as goofy as I look.

I like how people describe the Ford tuners as forgetting more than you'll ever know. It sounds very condescending.

Our driveshafts are aluminum and the three painted rings represent the part number associated with this driveshaft for our vehicles.
The driveshafts are manufactured by Visteon. They have not used labels on their driveshafts for years hence, the color code combinations.

All ford cars and trucks have a color code on there driveshafts for the different cars and trucks made. Two door,Four Door,King cab,Mustang,Marauder,ETC.There all different thickness and size and the color code matches them to the right ones.I beleve they use bar codes now.
From front to back, they are:
Pink, Green, Green.
Any ideas what the three paint rings mean? They're painted on by the vendor, he may make dozens or even hundreds of different driveshafts to different specs. for different vehicles and even different engine transmission combos for the same vehicle. They need a quick way to know that one driveshaft is different from another. We should all have the same three color rings on our car, due to same vehicle and engine and transmission combo. It also allows the inspector to check that its the correct driveshaft as the vehicle comes down the line. We have about a dozen different driveshafts for the Econoline alone, E150 - E450, cutaways, extended vans, engine combinations, etc.
Ken
I see that I was beaten to the punch, that'll teach me to take a phone call while posting. We still use paint codes on the Econoline, no bar codes yet. But some items use a bar code and the operator uses a code reader and if its the wrong part, then it will give them a warning. On the brake booster install job, wrong booster gives the operator an "oh nooo!" in a synthetic voice. Causes a chuckle everytime that I hear it.

this is a picture I took of the three shafts I grabbed out the junkyard. They all came off of 1999-2000 CVPI's and all are made by Alcoa. They are lined up by the "Alcoa MMC" stencil. Notice NONE of the shafts "rings" line up with anyone. I have talked with a few at a local driveshaft place here in town who balanced and polished my driveshaft and all three of these and they tell me they are manufacturing and QA marks. There is nothing important about them. I called (rather emailed) alcoa and was told the same thing.
Now I know that the Marauder shaft is not the MMC shaft, but thought it was relavent...

BTW, I have six plain jane AL shafts that look exactly like these, no two are alike with regards to the rings and all came off 2001-2003 CVPI's...
The Stencil will always read "MMC Police Alcoa C291 T6 XXXXX XX/XX/XX MMC Police"
