View Full Version : Widest rim on the front?

What is the widest a front rim can be before it rubs something?
18x9? 18x9.5? 18x10?

This is assuming that the correct amount of backspacing is used so it does not stick out farther than the factory rim...

If you know, chime in!

Kazara KZ-A Rims are 8-1/2" but I think that their offset moves the rim outboard more than the OEM 8" rim.

'Wesman' just posted some pics of a Cobra 18 x 9" rim mounted on the front of his roadcourse MM. You might want to 'PM' him about wide rims on the front.

I know Jerry Barnes is running 9" on the front of the SEMA car.

This is my question too, John, and I should have a better answer later in the week. Until then, my estimation is that a wider than stock wheel with a less than 50mm offset, should fit. I'm going to try a 35mm, I will let you know.

I think Jerry also has that width done on Trilogy 1.

I'm getting confused by the terms everyone is using here as of late...

I know we have a 50MM offset on our factory wheels.

Google says
<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD noWrap>50 millimeters = 1.96850394 inches</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD><TD> </TD><TD>More about calculator. (http://www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator)</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
(if you didn't know, you can type any math conversion or formula into the Google search box and it does the math for you. I typed in " 50 mm in inches" and got the above)

Does this mean that the mounting surface of the rim is 1.96.. inches from the front of the rim?

To answer this question and many more like it, I used my handy friend Google again (Donny isn't the only GooglePro here!)

Go here to answer ALL your questions about what fits, how to calculate custom rims and even figure the brake stuff too.

Now I'm going there to study this to see what fits and what hits...

I have 18x10 with 265/40/18. I had to make a 'bumper' on control arm to prevent tire from rubbing ABS wires. Search '18x10 with 265 front', I think, it's been a year or so.

Had to search under your posts. I didn't show up looking the other way for some reason. I like the look of the wider tire up front but it's a shame it compromises the turn radius.

F.Y.I., I have Pirelli 255/45 on stock rims in front, plus it's lowered 1.5 inches. No rub anywhere, no loss of turning radius, but it is a tight fit. IMHO, this is the maximum tire you can stuff in the front without mods or creating other problems. A 35mm offset wheel will fit the front, and allows 9" wide wheel, but I wouldn't go beyond 255 wide, IMHO.

I have had 285/680mm on a 9.5 inch rim with a 55offset on the front. Doesn't rub. 680mm is 26.77inches tall

Didn't rub on anything internal or didn't rub on the fender or either? From the last pics you posted, I would have thought there would be rubbing off of the fenders because it stuck out about and inch or two.

Got pics?

Could you please state the aspect ratio of the tire? 680mm tall doesn't help me in evaluating this combination. 285/??/18?

I think wesman is referring to race rubber :burnout: That width and height would make'em about 285-40-18...

The BBS LMs are the ones that don't rub, pics in my gallery. The Cobra R's are a 20mm offset they do rub the fender.

the race tires are 285/39 R18 roughly

Would a 18X9.5 w/45mm offset work or would I need a spacer?

wesman

A spacer would reduce the offset remember. You would go 45mm-spacer = your offset. As to whether it would clear your brakes, its totally up to the design of the wheel you buy. Chances are its not as tight as a stock Marauder wheel. But 9.5 wide should leave tons of room for your stock brakes.

I was looking into the Steeda Ultralite 05 that is for the '05 Stang.

There should be tons of caliper room to fit Mustang brake upgrades then.

Actually, I was thinking of that rim on a MM. The stock MM rims will fit the Stang so why not?
