View Full Version : Finally fed up with the sub

I finally got fed up with the sub rattles (more of a farting sound, really). I just couldn't get rid of it, it kept coming back, on an intermitent basis. Since I listen to music that is somewhat bass heavy, this is not good.

I still had this old box loaded with two 10" subs, just hanging around. This box and the subs have been in a couple of cars previously, and always treated me well. Time for it to spend some time in the Marauder...

First thing - clean out the old crap. The old sub is held in by 4 bolts. Once they're loosened, it just drops right out, nice and easy.

Next up, get the box ready. Since I'm still going to use the stock amp, both 10's would be overkill, and just cost me space. I chopped the box up, but left a little lip, to house the amp. The box measurements (H x W x L) are 10 x 11/13 x 15 + a 2.5" lip.

It fits like a glove! Still maintain lots of space, and sounds pretty good. It's not going to rattle cars around me, or be really annoying, but it sounds nice inside the car.

Even though I'm still running the same stock amp, the sub has substancially better response than the stocker, and a a little bit louder. Best of all, now I can have others in the car, and not be embassassed by my sub woofer farting.

Me and you are on the same wave length on this issue. I usually keep my bass level about 3 notches from max and at that level it can't be turned up at all (but sounds great at low level). If I crank the bass back, my ears just hear treble and it irritates me.

My last roadtrip with co-workers, they were decieved because at low level the sub sounds good and it makes you think it could go louder...NOPE! A crappy stereo system can ruin a Marauder experience for a potential fan, especially if they are sitting in the back seat :)

Maybe I should go see about a 10 inch sub myself. The entry level subs (small magnet) would probably work best as I would also want to use the factory amp for awhile. A truck box may fit as well up in that area.

I don't keep the bass level at about 66%. You'd be surprised how the stock amp performs. Again, it's not going to pount enough to rattle the car next to you, but I can feel the seat vibrate. It seems like the stock stereo pulls bass out, at maximum volume levels. With volume at 85%, everything sounds very nice, with no distortion.

I looked around for a box that would fit, and was having trouble finding something that would sit on the shelf, and still allow me to keep the spare. This interferes with the spare, so I'll end up doing something about it later, bur for now I'm happy with the fix.;)

Considering I paid nothing (had this stuff lying around), I'd do it again...

Where's the spare tire?

Where's the spare tire?
Right now, it's sitting on the garage floor :(

My intent wasn't that this was an end state - more of a test of the sub + stock amp, and to see how well the sound would penetrate through the back seat.

Now I know the 10" sounds pretty good, even powered by the stock amp. I can spend some time, and make sure a box has proper demensions, and still allows for the spare. I'm still trying to decide what (if anything) to do about the head unit... It'll be a couple of months before I fully plan out, and execute on the total package. But, the replacement speakers (2 x 6"x8" in the doors and 2 x 6.75" on the rear deck) and the replacement sub make a big difference. It's now enjoyable to turn the radio on...

[knocking on wood] Just in case, I've got CAA (Canadian version of AAA), and a can of tire filler in the trunk. [/knocking on wood]
