Looks like I got a bad tank of gas, and the darn thing runs rough. Ran a tank or so through it, but it's still rough. What are everyone's thoughts/opinions on fuel additive injector cleaners? Brands? I believe the owners manual suggests not to run any additives, though I think that was only regarding oil additives? Help!

Chevron....Black Bottle....is supposed to be the best!!??

I have been told they put a bottle in the glove box of all new Corvettes??

It's a bit pricey but it seems to work. I run a bottle through my MM every 3 months or so but I have never had any rough running condition!! ;)

I have been told that if you come up with a bad injector Bosch (I think they still supply Ford) will replace your engine free of charge and take yours in to try and determine the cause of the failure!!??

Try the Chevron stuff and if it still runs bad let your dealer have a look!!

I use Barryman's B-12 every 3000 miles... good stuff.

Yeah, have used the Cheveron stuff in other cars, liked it, and have seen the Berryman's, though never tried that. I was actually thinking along the lines of BG. Does Ford/Mercury have a product they use?

Sure you didn't get a tankfull of watergas? If you did, it will take several tanks to clear out. Try running some dry gas through.

Chevron Techron is great. I used it inmany of my past cars. It works great. I could tell an improvement in the way my cars ran after putting a bottle in.

I have also used Marvel Mystery Oil although I dont know how much it does. I just tried it a few times on a recommendation. Couldnt really tell performance difference.

For water in the gas you can buy any of the cleaners designed to get water out or just buy a tankfull of 87 octane gasahol (the stuff that has 10% ethanol) and either go easy for that tank or add some octane booster. The ethanol will absorb the water and run it on through, then run a tank with some ATF in it. Once a year I run a quart of transmission fluid in a tank of gas. It has the best detergents and is a light oil that lubricates while it cleans the injectors. Good for the pump too.

And you know it's cheap insurance to replace that fuel filter at least every two years. I'm a technician but it's not that hard a job. It just might be the filter giving you heck in the first place.

Buy gas wherever they sell the most. You stand a better chance because they keep the tanks flushed out selling a lot of gas.

Add a bottle of Gumout "Regane" Complete Fuel System Cleaner to your next fill-up.
Its in a clear bottle and the liquid inside looks like Gold Tequila.
Its the ONLY Fuel System Cleaner I use and I swear by it.
I've been using it over 20 years, and on every vehicle I've used it on,
I've felt a difference in the perfomance, after 2 tankfuls of gas, after you apply it.
It is Gumout Stock # 7727, UPC code 0-71948-07727-0
It is sold in MOST Automotive Accessory stores, and most department stores.

In the past the word REGANE (NOT ROGAINE) was printed in BIG LETTERS on the label.
Now the word Regane is incorporated into the wording, so the salespeople may not recognize it as Regane anymore.
The Part number has stayed the same, just the bottle label has changed.
This stuff has worked better than anything else I've tried.

And for water reduction, you can use any Dry Gas that is made with ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.
Stay away from anything that is made with any other chemical.
It can damage your fuel tank lining, as well as the rubber seals in your injectors.

Our tech at work also believes in Marvel's Mystery Oil. He drove a Ford Fiesta for 200,000 miles with only routine maintenance. He credits the Marvel's. The only reason he stopped driving the Fiesta to work is because his dog out grew it.

Techron seems to be the one universally accepted additive.
I used it in my last car and had no problems with it. I wish I could say that it worked great, but I think any time my motor ran rough, had more to do with bad fuel.

I agree with Techron recommendation. I've read that BG 44 is to strong and can deteriorate seals etc. and should be used as a last-resort.

My old Lincoln buddies swore by SeaFoam products in the 4.6 Town Cars. I used it occasionally, but sparingly as a fuel addative and per the directions to the crankcase 100 miles prior to an oil change.

Techron. Only.
I contacted Chevron and asked if "Techron" could and should be used in other brand fuels that contained 10 % ethanol. The reply was from one of their chemical engineers. I'll try to find the e-mail and print it--but the gist of his answer was--to use Techron and enjoy the results--no problem with ethanol--just added some tonite--will let you know

 What about the STP Fuel Injector cleaner it comes in a black plastic bottle I use it a long time in my past Panthers and now in my new adquisition, I use it after every oil/oil filter change and after that twice a month or three a times a month.

I used the Marvel Mystery oil in my ole Bronco. It was a 315 with a carb.

Is this stuff ok on EFI cars?

I would not feel comfy with that in the MM, but the 89 F250 could use all the help she can get.

stryker, STP fuel injector cleaner is a fine product, but using it 2 or 3 times a month is way overkill and a waste of money. Use it at each oil change and perhaps once in between and you'll get the most benefit.

DEFYANT: while MMO is a good product, it's primarily a UCL (upper cylinder lube) and its usefulness in modern motors is limited. I'd be concerned about possible effects on the cats and the O2 sensors. Using a fuel system cleaner like Techron, Regane, or the above-mentioned STP product 2 or 3 times a year should keep everything nice and clean.

BG44K is good stuff, however, lots of dealers and repair shops push BG 44K products, because at the bottom of the can, is a token. The token is worth points that you can trade in on for stuff when the BG sales rep comes by. Which is why the dealers push it so much.

That being said, it is good stuff. But very very strong. When I worked at the dealer in High School, the pushed BG very hard. It did make a difference. The oil additive smells like brake fluid. Go figure.

I agree with RF, Techron additive is good. Seafoam is good, as is Berryman B12 Chemtool. I have used all with decent results.

Just as a friendly reminder, fuel filters are cheap and easy to change, I like to put a clean one in every 15K as a precautionary measure. Do your fuel pump a favor!
