Well my negotiation skills need to be in full task for the next few days!
After considering the many things that need to be done to our current Marquis LS (1999) my dad and I, after dropping it off at the dealer looked around the lot.
He had told me a few days ago that he was considering a new Marquis, so after a walk around the lot we discovered an 05' LSE ($32k) and an 05' L Ultimate ($35k) that were to my dad's liking.
Of course I most admired the LSE with its center shifter and handling package, but then I saw a flash of light and with a turn of my head I shouted with glee! The unmistakable 18 inch chrome rims of a Marauder scattered the light and called to me from the far reaches of the otherside of the parking lot.
I immediately dragged my dad and the sales guy (Doug, who had earlier said "Well, YOU tell your dad what this is about." as he handed me the master key to the lock boxes, saying I knew more about the cars on the lot then he did.) and we peered in and opened it up and let my dad sit down. It's a 2003 with 24k on the clock.
So here's the standing deal. IF we get a new car, it will be either the LSE, the Ultimate, or the Marauder...we just have to sort through some Pros/Cons, not my pros or cons, but my parents.
Marauder:
Pro- Adjustable foot pedals (My mom is way tiny), 6-disc, leather, performance (mostly handling), They're asking $23k for it, VERY appealing to my dad.
Con- The "power aspect" of it makes my mom nervous, and it's not BRAND NEW. Plus, I think my dad would feel defeated giving into buying one. He thinks it end up mine when I left college.
LSE:
Pro- It's brand new, it's several thousand less than the Ultimate, it has more horsepower, adjustable pedals, and it has a $5000 rebate.
Con- Um, my mom might not like the center shifter, but that can be over come.
Ultimate:
Pro- It has some extras including a moonroof, digital gauges, heated seats, and (same as all other 05' Marquis) $5000 cash rebate.
Con- It's $35k, not the same as the Marauder's $23k, and the LSE have everything my parents are looking for and then some.
So the next few days are going to be sweated out and unslept. Whatever they buy may be sold to me in college or when I graduate from college. It's not exactly something I can or should pray for, but I'm sure hoping my parents make the right choice:D

James,
Just let them know that the MM is a collectable and will only increase in value.
Maybe that'll sell'em on the idea. Good luck.

When I am called upon to page back, there is a point in time in my history where my knowledge exceeded my father's. Bookmark the summer of 1969, when my father and I both wanted new cars. It was news that neither of us were going to war, that's all it took. We would have gone, but were told to stand down. So, now what?
He wanted to get out of his '65 Corvair and he liked my two Impalas a lot. No doubt, my two Impalas, one a '65 Caprice with a small block and Powerglide, and a '66 SS with a big block and Borg-Warner T-10, had something to do with his lasting impression, and desire.
I owned both of them by then, and he loved driving them. His Corvair 110 4 door was about to dry rot where it sat. Likewise for me, I dumped the '65 Caprice for the '66 SS big block with a four speed, and I loved my '68 Camaro small block RS with four speed, for it's handling, after lugging my '66 SS around town.
At Nickey Chevrolet on Irving Park Road, we found both. A '69 Brookwood wagon in BRG with saddle interior, and '69 SS big block M-22 Camaro in silver I wanted. We took both, and he was proud to see his Brookwood come to be my tow car. I think he had this planned all along.
That's the history, but I fondly recall which one of us was calling the shots. My father didn't give it up easy, or, fast. He was a very bright man, perhaps stale on what was cutting edge automobile that day, but bright enough that you could not catch him at the game. Someday, I'll share the "he stole my race car" story, but until then, I took a chance and stood my '69 performance ground. He admired that.
James, the argument before you may have nothing to do with which car is the best financial selection. It may not have anything to do with features, options, potential power, or, financing. It may have more to do with a father recognizing that his son is now a man. It was like this for me, and I was only 19 in 1969.
Best wishes, James, and remember...You will be in your father's shoes some day. Take the walk?

When I was 19 (in 1975) I drove a Pinto station wagon that my father owned. It was that, or walk. I handed the keys back to him two years later so he could trade it in on a GMC high cube van, and bought my first new car financed all by myself, a '77 VW Scirocco. Not only could I not afford cool muscle cars, but I would never been allowed to own them while living at home. The Scirroco squeaked by because it was small, a VW, and looked practical. That it was fast as hades and could handle like its Porsche brethern never crossed their minds.

Thanks for that Mac. A post by you once again not only shapes how I'll look at this moment in my life, but how I'll apply it to my life in general.
My "father" has seen me grow up, but not all of the way. He is after all, my step dad. This is what I love about my family, that I get along with my step-family...except for the fact that they're all taller than me. (Who DOESN'T have a step-family these days anyway!?)
Anywho, I'll still be driving the mini-van 80-90% of the time. It's not desirable but it's something that get's me from place to place. And on the bright side, it's something that can get me where I need to be to make money so I can afford a nice car...and college.
Moving on, this is something my dad will buy, I will influence and my mom will drive more than half the time, even though she doesn't drive much. The car will be used for vacations and general travel for my dad. It will be washed and babied like the Cobra, and then I can have it when my mom no longer needs it IF I can PAY for it.
But hey, to say I have a Marauder sitting in my driveway...how cool is that! If I'm a good kid and I don't pester my parents 24/7, I can drive it when I ask to if it's a reasonable request. (Asking to use the car to take my girlfriend and I out of state on a whitewater rafting expedition is not reasonable, for example.)
Thanks for the kind thoughts and stories....I'm a giddy little boy on the inside right now. The most important thing is that, Whatever they buy, it is extremely likely to be something I'll try to buy back from them in 4 or 5 years. At that point they'll only need one car and I'll need one car. So we'll help eachother.
Keep up the good thinking!

If the goal is to have a ride to climb into after a hard day of work and mozy on home, slow, steady, comfortable, the Grand Marquis will give that all to you serving a soft ride on the platter.
If the goal is to have a ride to climb into after a hard day of work, speed home, take the 35MPH turn at 45MPH, and show people that Domestics still live on and who cares about the friggen gas prices, the sinister Marauder is the choice.
IMHO when comparing the two, the only thing the Marauder lacks is a plush ride - which for those who like to hit corners, aren't too concerned about. This is why I am not complaining :D
After 22 hours of being awake and having completed a 12 hour work shift inside of that, sometimes I wish I drove a Grand Marquis. But every other day, the MARAUDER, hands down.

Jimmy, I think that you should explain to your Mom that the Marauder is a perfectly tame car that can easily be driven daily, and that the in it's stock form it won't even spin the tires when you floor the gas pedal. She should be pointed to the fact that the Marauder is a "peppy" car, but it isn't crazy fast, and that once she takes it for a test drive, she will absolutely love it, and feel very confident behind the wheel.

....thats the ticket---you gotta roll the dice and tell them a test drive is necessary........in hope that that is what will do the trick as
Billy G says ^^^^^^^^above here---you have to motivate them into doing this -----try something...don't want to be saying later...I should have done that .......good luck-----I take it it is Black --the MM --Right?

James, if the MM has no mods: chip or other changes; then mom's never gonna tell the difference in power between the MM and GM. Barb drove my 97 Cobra all the time, and remarked how smooth and docile it was. It's the secret of the Ford performance theory; keep your foot out of it, and it's a mom car. The thing she gets is safety, and stealth cool. The suspension goodies, and large brakes give her an edge over the GM's and the much lower price, is gonna make dad happy.
Remember, the quoted price is where you start negotiating, and I'm sure you can do better than the 23K asking price. That, of course, is where you come in, as you can work with the salesman on your own, remembering, and reminding him, that plenty of '04 MM's went out the door, brand new, for 25K, and less. If it's a lease, all the better. The first thing I'd do would be to get our pal Royal to run the SR number for the car's history to make sure it's OK; that will impress dad even more.
Good luck, James, Barb and I hope your folks make the correct decision ....getting the MM, of course. :cloud9:

James - Doug already knows the car comes with a whole bunch of cool friends and he's met many of us. Tell your mom there are some ladies out there that drive the MM daily and absolutely love it. Comfort, style, safety, class, a little get-up-and-go when needed, and a son that will take great care of "her." :D

Marauder! Marauder! Marauder! Marauder!
Use this line ----> "Mom, Dad, It's fiscally much more responsible to buy a nice pre-owned car, someone else has already taken the big depreciation hit up front for us."
Also point out to Mom that a Ford ESP plan can be purchased to help keep it in new condition for years (to help her feel comfortable about a "used" car). I don't buy brand new cars since I discovered I can afford a lot more car by choosing one slightly used in pristine condition that still has some "new car" warranty left on it. That's the ONLY way I could get a car as hot as a Marauder. Send a PM to RoyLPita with the VIN for the OASIS report, the "in service" date - that'll tell ya how much new car warranty is left and whether or not it has had a lot of problems. As far as I am concerned, if a car still has some new car warranty left, then it's still NEW. While still under that warranty I can get every little picky thing fixed properly.

Here's a good rule of thumb to follow when the topic is automobiles.
Nothing is rare until someone wants one, and nothing is worth more than what someone is willing to pay.

Wow, they upped it to 280HP? What changed? So they are making Grand Marquis with 20 less HP, and an SOHC engine that develops torque in lower RPMS than our DOHC?

Uh, no slim? It's got a handling package on the regular V8...I know you work at Ford but that's clearly not correct.
Ford ALMOST built a 265 horsepower Crown Victoria but decided it would take sales away from the almost available Marauder so it never happened.
But other than that, this car only has 239 horses. And as far as the exterior goes, the only way to tell if it's an LSE is by the dual exhaust and different rims. Inside, it has the center shifter.
I'm actually suprised to see the LSE back...they stopped doing that for a while with the Marquis.

I went to the website and "built" my LSE, after supplying my all important Zip code; and couldn't learn anything interesting about the car, such as information about the engine, or transmission.
Had that been a Chrysler website they'd have been shouting : It's got a HEEEMMMEEE in it. Unfortunately, in the case of the GM's, Lincoln/Mercury makes no such claim. :o

Buying a new Crown Vic or Grand Marquis seems like a very bad idea considering how poor their resale value holds.
The Marauder, at least, holds it's value relatively well.

Ryan,
You are correct. The LSE is in the website. My error was that the LSE is not listed on every page so when they show models, it may not show the LSE.
Question. It says the LSE has Chrome Plated 16 inch wheels. If I remember correctly, the Ford version, LX Sport, has 17 inch wheels. Also, the Ford version is limited to only four colors, the same four colors that the two years of MM's had. The LSE has quite a few more colors listed.

Well, A Marauder is a Marauder, after all.
The price is way too high for a used Marauder. Look on EBAy, look on any of the other online auto sites. 24,000miles for $23k? No way.
Look in MM.net under the classifieds.
If you want a normal Grand Marquis, which is a really nice car imho, the handling package is the key, at least for me.

I have the 2002 press kit from L/M on the 2003 release of the Gran Marquis line. They list the Gran Marquis in GS trim, LS trim and LSE trim. I have the Marauder press release too, it was announced seperately.
All three got the same 2V 4.6L engine, rated at 220 HP for the GS and LS with a 2:73 rear end. The LSE was rated at 235 HP because it has dual exhaust, and a 3:27 rear end. Hope this helps.

An innocent mistake I think ...
Slim's probably thinking of the "LSE" optioned Lincoln LS. There was/is? such an animal that has a mild body kit on it.
Never heard the 265 HP GM-CV rumor.
Ford needs to start doing some things ... & not just with their regular 4.6
Take their 3.0 Duratec V6 for example, not a bad engine but GEEZ ... it's still only puting out @ the same power it did back when it was introduced in 1996 ?

Yup and it was shortly after that those HP ratings were bumped up by four HP!

I think Ford decided to do what many regular Panther owners did after the MM came out ...
They started using the MM airbox setup on them.
I believe this was even doucumented in black & white somewhere(the new Panthers using the better airbox setup).
Eric < ----- brand new MM airbox/MAF setup collecting dust that never made it on the 97 TC ..... yet.

Was reading on CVN that the '05 CVPIs use the MM airbox/MAF for an increase in hp to 250. The civilian CVs and GMs still rated @ 239 w/Dual Exhaust, 224 hp with single exhaust.

Wonder' if the MM airbox & MAF alone was worth the extra 11 ponies ?.
Some day I'll get a modified tune in the SCT 1725 for my TC, so I can actually USE the MM setup.

My bad. I was thinking Lincoln LSE. You were speaking of the GM with the LSE package. Sorry about that.

Google each year after that 220 and somewhere along the lines you'll find a 4hp increase...which is where they are now! Don't know where it came from...
It'sall good slim!

Woaface,
So what happened?
Did your parents buy a new car?
If so, which one did they buy?
