View Full Version : Rocky Mountain tuners

:bows: :bows: MM Newbie here. I live in Albuquerque which is around 5100 ft. above sea level. I am wanting to upgrade the performance of the car without going to supercharger. The new tuners are designed for around 700-800 ft above sea level and the highest octane level available here is 91. I am wanting to install the 410 gears, Tuner(maybe the Excalibrator)and an intake(K&N Cold Air) Question: has anyone perfomed mods at higher altitudes? would the 93 octane tune work(with higher altitude 91 octane) I talked with Lidio at Alternative Auto and he does not remember ever setting up MM tunes for Denver, Albuquerque or other higher altitude areas. Just thought I would run it by you good people who like to play with different options. Thanks :bows:

I'm in Salt Lake City which is also pretty high up and also limitted to 91 octane gas. Dennis crafted me a tune that works great with 91 octane. The car has considerably more power, and never pings or knocks. I would think that Dennis, Lidio or any of the tuners should be able to solve that problem for you.

With the higher altitude, you'll see less air in the motor than you would near sea level, this is one of the reasons you won't find anything above 91 octane at high altitude because it merely is not needed.

I'm in Denver, CO (Aurora) which is about 5,400 ft. The highest I can get here without going to race fuel is 91 as well, and I'm running 13lbs of boost on top of 9.8:1 compression. Even when it was near 100 degrees outside and the motor and SC were at operating temp, I could get on the motor without the motor seeing knock and kicking back timing. When it did start kicking timing back, it pulled it back to 25 degrees advanced from 28. I plan to start tracking the car again and will use water injection so I can go for extended periods of time on the throttle. I'll also use 105 octane for a safety margin.

Next week, I am going to Phoenix, AZ (passing through Albuquerque) and plan to have the water injection done and tested/tuned to make sure I can trust it at 900ft and 110+ degrees.

I don't use a preprogrammed chip, I use a TwEECer RT (www.tweecer.com) which allows me to data log and make any change I need to the computer. This is very helpful when you change things like injectors and the MAF.

With all that said, you should be fine getting a preprogrammed chip if you're not going for maximum performance and saftey (and not adding serious power adders). If you notice knock, your computer will kick the timing back to an extent, but I would look for a new program if that were to happen. When the computer sees knock at a lower RPM, it will kick it back, all the way through the RPM band even if it does not hear knock.
