View Full Version : Yet another mystery tranny story
I've seen other threads about this same problem. Everything was going well until I stopped for gas. When I started back up and got on the highway, the cra wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear. I was going about 70 and turning 5000 rpms. I pulled over at the next rest stop, shut it down for a couple of seconds, and everything has been fine since.
I've read others experience similar things, but does anyone know why this happens and how much longer before I lose the tranny.

Mine also did strange things one day. I wanted to see what happens when I start out in the "2" position. (Starts and stays in 2nd, good for starting off in snow). After I shifted to the "D" position, it would search for various gears. It would pop out of 4th into 3rd, back into 4th, down to 3rd, etc. etc. etc. Like you, I pulled over, shut ignition off. Waited 10 seconds. Started up, put it in "D" and drove off, and the transmission is working perfect. Needless to say, I have never put it back into 2nd anymore.
As Red Buttons used to say, "Strange Things Are Happining" :D

Mine did that when it was really new.
It wouldn't shiftout of two, and occationally wouldn't shift back into OD after the OD OFF button had been used. I would literally have to pull off the highway, shift to park, turn off the car...and start all over again.
It was the shift linkage cable. Notorious on the 300a early builds. Another issue on the assembly line ...probably the same guy responsible for installing the 3" rubber gromet over the big hole in our trannys exposing the inards to miles and miles of wet and salty crud.:shake:
I asked the dealer to tighten the shifter linkage, and I have never had that problem since.
