Insulator pads above the cats are being replaced due to excessive heat can cause them to sag and start smoking or cause fire. Don't have recall number in front of me, been out a few weeks. Our MM's have same insulator pads. Same deal with the axles, problems noted but only recalling police and taxi vehicles since they are driven more (supposedly) and problems should only show on them. Interesting, you would think over time no matter what problem would show on our MM's, when I had my axles pulled, you could see the wear, at 25k.

Only the taxis CVs and CVPIs have the axle replacement recall. As for the insulator pads, there have been quite a few cop cars showing up for the recall.

my insulator pads must be okay, I sat for 2hours in 100f heat, on US1 going out of the keys, with the AC on full bore, that was after 2hours of stop and go traffic up from MM 71

recall 05s32
Certain 2003-2005 model year Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and commercial Heavy duty taxi vehicles built at the St. thomas Assembly Plant from October 10, 2001 through December 14, 2004. At the extremely high operating temperatures typical of police and taxi drive cycles, the dash outer insulator could sag and possibly contact the surface of the light-off catalyst. If this occurs, the outer layer of the insulator may char, possibly resulting in a burning odor, smoke, or ultimately a fire.
Not on our vehicles, but keep an eye on it anyway.

Gotta love Ford for issuing recall on axles for Police and Taxi's only. I pulled mine around 25-27k, and sure enough saw same wear as the Police vehicles we had been changing. I think most have caught it when gear change done on this site, they had them checked and replaced.

The material that is used commonly now, is much cleaner looking.
Roylpita can you get part #'s?

Last week I had my exhaust done and while my car was on the lift I noticed a nice size piece of the insulation lining was gone.I smelled something burning a few times but could never figure out what it was. Lately I have been feeling a lot of heat from the drivers side floor and thought it was the exhaust.......Is it easy to replace them????

Yes, how difficult is it to replace this? I"ve had exhaust work done a year or so ago and the guy lit mine on fire!

My '03 CVPI was done, seemed like it was a very easy operation.

My driver's side was hanging down on the cat for a few weeks until I realized what the burn smell was. I just have it tied up now and continue to check both sides when I check my oil every week.
Once I can get my exhaust done I'm going to pull all that oem crap off and put up all new (COOL-IT Thermo-Tec Adhesive Backed Heat Barrier) stuff up in it's place and also wrap my headers.. JEGS.com sells the stuff in different size sheets for fairly cheap I guess.

I put that stuff on mine and it wouldn't stay stuck. The thermal barrier separated from the adhesive layer and dropped down onto the exhaust system.

Any pics? Part numbers? I'd like to replace mine, it's hanging down from being disturbed by so many engine changes and exhaust system mods.

Here is the Part number: 5W7Z- 5401588-E .
I do not believe that the price for this part would "break the bank".

I would have guessed the part, to be several times that cost!
Does Ford subsidise the cost of recalled parts?

Does the recall specify an adhesive to use or are the pads adhesive backed?

Thank you RoyLPita. Thought I was gonna have to spend a arm and leg on the insulating sheets. The larger sheets/rolls 12"x48" start out around $50 at summit. $5.22 from my local dealer is a much better cost.

I had to finally cut the section that was hanging down on my drivers side. The insulator pad looks to be all one piece on my car and goes up the transmission tunnel and while tugging on one side its pulling on the other side. Another weird thing.

Noticed that myself.
Here are some pics of my melted heat sheilding above my driver side cat...

I'm just gonna cut it w/ a razor knife, and try to 2 side tape on the section for the transmission tunnel back w/this industrial 3M stuff I have at work. Or rivet velcro on the insulation and use adhesive backed velcro on the fire wall. When I get some time I'll pull it all out and buy a roll of the same stuff from Summit or Jegs and piece it up there so its not flapping in the wind. Doesn't seem right though :dunno:

I thought the same thing, my guess is that it the pads are smaller because it may be difficult to get all of the old matting out of there.
Anybody done it yet?

Nothing happened thank god. I didnt go in for the recall yet. I gotta get in. Thats part of the insulator on my 04PI. This happened at Byron Dragway matter of fact after doing a few runs down the strip i saw it sagging. I said **** it and smelled the SOB burning when i got home. IT definitely was ignited.

I think Ford should expand the recall to any affected Panther.
Might be Fords' way of cutting the number of Panthers.
