Wanted to stock up on oil, so went over to the local AutoZone to get some of the Mobil 1 synthetic 0-20w I always use, which Mobil says is compatible with the 5-20 our cars use. (And I have never seen Mobil 1 5-20 anyway.) The guy told me that they were discontinuing carrying that oil, I assume because they are stocking up heavily on the new regular Mobil 5000 as well as other brand synthetics, and _not_ because Mobil is discontinuing that oil?

Anyway, he told me that I could have as much as I wanted on closeout at $2 per quart! All he had was 8 quarts of the 0-20, but he had 17 quarts of the 0-30 at the same price, so it took me about 1 second to go for it and I grabbed everything he had. (He only had 2 quarts of M1 5-30, but said that wasn't the same deal.) So I got 25 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic for an even $50. :D

So, questions: has anyone heard about Mobil 1 0-20 being dropped from the line? And not to get into a big oil thread, but can I use the 0-30 in my car, or I guess I should say _should_ I use it, and can it be mixed with the 0-20 or should I keep it separate? I never used to think anything about adding a quart of plain 30 wt. in a pinch to a car running 10-30, but with these synthetics I'm not sure if things are the same and if they can or should be mixed.

If I can't use the 0-30, I'll just check around and see if I can swap it for 0-20 somewhere, or I could always take it back if I had to.

Thanks as always for any info!

I think I read somewhere that they were getting rid of the 0-20 for the new formulas. I would think that the 0-30 would be fine for the summer because it's a synthetic. I would rather use the 0-20 for the winter.

Are you sure you can take it back? He did sell it to you at a closeout price. That usually means that they don't want to see it again. I guess it's just oil so he won't give you a problem. If it was mechanical or electronics, it would be a different story.

Did not know that Mobil-1 came in 0W-30. No way I would use that 5W-20 "water" in any of my cars here in the Florida heat. It took me a long time to drop down in viscosity to the 10W-30 that I use now. I still have plenty of both Mobil-1 and RedLine in the 10W-30 weights, but the next time I have to buy oil, unless I find it on sale, I will get the Mobil-1 5W-40 (or was it 15W-40 SUV formula) that I have seen. At the moment, in my vehicles, I have:

20W-50 Golden Spectro in my GoldWing.
10W-30 AmsOil in my MM
10W-30 Mobil-1 in my Continental

As you can see, I have no "Oil Loyalty". I buy the good stuff when it is on sale.

Thanks. The seasons here are so mild and pretty regular that I don't think in terms of summer or winter oils. Can I mix them up though? I'll also check with the Mobil 1 hotline they have and see what they say.

and can it be mixed with the 0-20 or should I keep it separate? It's perfectly alright to mix the two.

Well okay now. Now, this is officially an oil thread.

I wasn't really comfortable with y'all trying to hide it anyway. So, hope y'all are happy...

Sorry Mac! Believe me, I read every thread I could find on this for over an hour yesterday before posting this and asking these questions. I specifically wanted to know if it was OK to mix them, and whether 0-30 was a big deal NOT to use. Thanks to RF Overlord for answering. I didn't want this to devolve into an oil argument, but was just stoked about getting 25 quarts of synthetic for that price, and wanted to find a way to use it.

I learned a lot about the 5-20 Ford wants us to use. I have enough oil now for 4 oil changes as RF says it is OK to mix them, and I will only need to do that once (2 quarts of 0-20 with 4 quarts of 0-30). From my own reading I'm pretty sure I will switch to the Mobil 1 5-30 when that stuff is used up, which will be quite a while.

Thanks to everyone for the great info as always.

Regards,

Norm

For what it's worth!!??

We recommend MOBIL 1 synthetic and only MOBIL 1 synthetic motor oils. Even in 15-50w, MOBIL 1 will flow at —55F and will not coke until temperatures are in the 500F range while giving a lubricity that virtually eliminates all engine wear. Varnish and sludge formation become almost non-existent as do lubrication related engine repairs. We have seen engines with over 200,000 miles that had all internal components meet new specifications! One final point: MOBIL 1 is the oil of choice for most Formula 1 cars and road racing vehicles. The red line for Formula 1 cars is between 17,000 and 18,000rpms. Think about this, it says quite a lot.

During the warranty period one should use the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer. In reality the 10-30w will protect at any temperatures encountered in all fifty states. We have used the 15-50w year round here in Pennsylvania since 1986 with absolutely no problems.

The oil change interval should be every 3,000 to 5,000 miles depending on the severity of your driving conditions. Remember that city driving is far harder on the oil than highway driving as is towing and extended high-speed motoring.

The oil filter should be replaced at, every oil change and only quality filters should be used. We recommend using OEM filters or the following aftermarket brands: MOBIL 1 and PUROLATOR. There may be other equally good brands but we have no long term experience with them.

Finally, a word about additives - NO. To be direct most modern additives are directed at engine wear and protection and they are probably beneficial with conventional oils. The lubricity of the MOBIL 1 is so great that these additives have virtually no effect besides costing you your money.

Mobil 1 0W-20 has been discontinued.
There have also been some other grades misplaced/discontinued
to make way for the 5000, 7500 and 15,000 mile oils...

I am currently using the Mobil 1 5W-30 oil and I do not notice
any difference from the Mobil 1 0W-20 oil.

I am also using the K&N HP-2010 Oil fIlter since my first oil change.
I have no problems with startup knock, and oil pressure readings.
My reports form Blackstone Labs also don't show any abnormalities
other than the usual readings you would expect from a 4 cam engine.

Use what ever Motor oil you like that fits your budget, climate, and conscience.
You can alwasy switch grades if the temperature drops or heats up.
