The tint on my rear window has develop bubbles, it is under warranty and the guy at the tint shop said they needed the whole day because they have to put a chemical on tint film and allow sun to heat it before removing.
Does this sound right?? Has anyone here had tint film removed and redone??? Can this chemical they use damage the interior of the car. Anyone with experience in this area I would appreciate some help. Thanks.

Smokie,
I spoke with my tint shop recently because I wanted to understand the pros and cons of tinting. I had my rear done.
The way he explained it, they spray I think ammonia all over the film and cover with black plastic to draw heat in.
They may have said the whole day because they have to scrape off the adhesive after getting it off. I could be wrong, just my 2 cents.

Just make sure your rear windows defog / defroster works. If they break any of the lines that line won't work.

Thats true. Smokie, how old is your tint by the way?

When I first had my tints put on, they guy butchered the back film and it had little lips curling upward all along the edges. It stayed on for about 3 weeks before I made them take it off and redo it. Luckily, the second guy to do it was a pro and knew what he was doing.
Sadly, when taking the old film off, the defroster lines did come partially off in a few small spots. I have never used the defroster, so I'm unsure if it still works or not. I'm thinking it will because it didn't remove the entire line, just half of the yellow pigment over about 1" segments (3x of them).
Seeing that your tint has been on far more than 3 weeks, it may be difficult to remove safely?

Thanks, it has been there 3 years, and I am concerned about the defroster and also will the spray damage interior if they are sloppy ???

All that was used was water when they applied my tints, I am not sure about removing. I removed the front tints off my 99 CV back in the day and all it took was a razor blade and windex - blade to peel and windex to take off all the stickey goo crud left over.

Check yer warranty buddy and see if they're liable for damage to the defroster grid. If they are, you might get a new window out of 'em if they screw it up.
BTW, these bubbles happen because the ends don't get sealed and over time the moisture down here creeps in from the ends and lets the film lift up and off. Problem seems to be the stretchy stuff they use for the compound curved glass as I have used the non-stretchy stuff in the past, putting it on in strips, and never had a bubbling problem even though I didn't use any sealer (clear fingernail polish works good).
Also, use sealer on the edges of your windows and they'll never peel up at the edges.

Why did you remove it? Did it start to go bad, or did the cops harass you about it too much?

Another way to replace / remove the rear window tint, or any window tint for that matter, is to have the window "accidentially" break and have your insurance company pay to replace it.....

I never told you this.

I had all the windows de-tinted at a local shop I trust (about a hundred bucks). Took about half a day. Have only found one minor scratch on one of my windows. If I retint, I will use the same shop. Ihad read about possible damage to defroster on this web site and on others, decided it was a better idea for me to pay someone that has experience with the removal than trying to do it myself. Tinting was removed due to visibility problems at night through dark (legal) tinting. Bad eyes.

Thank you for the responses, there are no two ways about it, I have to allow a stranger to touch my car, gives me the creeps.
These people are supposed to be experts (just like Mercury dealers are experts with our cars. ) so will see how it goes, it happens Friday unless it rains.:alone:
