Not much call for displaying my Marauder 1/4 mile times while banging around the Beltway in Washington DC. Speed limits 55 MPH unless I see my kids out west. Does it hurt anything to keep OD OFF consistantly. Car feels more powerful, responsive at ~2,500 RPM & 55-60 MPH, but I don't want to break anything.

Who worries about shreaded OD belts?

I keep the O/D off around town or when I anticipate a "spirited" run. I keep it on when cruising on the highway.

What is you MPG with it off?

Same here...around town with speeds under 70 or when I plan a WOT run..it's off!!

Defyant and others,

I keep mine off on wot runs but even when at 40-50 mph I get scared the engine is reving to high.

What is a high rev point on our engine with 4.10's?
Isn't it bad to be at a high rev point?

Just curious as I want my engine to last long and don't want to abuse it.

Mine will be on unless I am getting on the highway or manually shifting the beast.

I drive with my OD OFF until I get to 65+, then I turn it on.
When exiting the highway, I turn it back off when I'm at 55,
and it stays off until the Marauder is parked.

............Ms. M and I have a saying.."it's not an outing unless it's over 100 mph --once ..more are at their expense"----sorry--couldn't help myself--carry on---

Thanks for this thread. Since this is my first overdrive tranny equiped vehicle, i was wondering about that myself, but mostly at what speed you turn it off or on.

Started out when i first got it back in January driving with the OD on even around town. For the past few weeks have been running with it off till i hit the highway and 60 to 70 mph. (love hearing the pipes howl with it off) .

Just got my Xcal2 today but haven't used it yet. Will be using the stock 3.55 gears for the time being so does this make a difference.

Just ran into this last May when 3rd clutches took a dump. I'm now running with O/D off if there's even a slight chance of making a part throttle downshift from O/D back to third. My feeling is 3rd clutches aren't getting enough pressure on the part throttle 4-3 downshift on the 4r75w.

This tranny was supposed to be an upgrade but I spoke with the transmission man at AutoWay Ford where I took it in for the warranty repair and he said there really wasn't much difference between the 70 and the 75. They changed the stupid clip that comes off the band, some other minor changes.

Anybody else know of any real differences? If what he said is true I'm thinking the J-mod might be good for us 2004 owners as well. I'm gonna keep on with the changes he made and see but there's a turbo out there with "Quicksilver" written all over it and if it dumps again I might put a J-mod into it myself.

Supposedly it will help the tranny live longer too. I can't complain. Fun Fun Fun.

Just curious as I want my engine to last long and don't want to abuse it.With 4.10's in a Marauder that has the factory tire size, you're only reving at 2,450-2,500 RPM's at 50 MPH with the O/D in the off position. That isn't too high at all. If you were reving over 3,000 RPM's, that would be a bit high, but even at that it wouldn't be detrimental to the engine, but just would be pretty bad for gas mileage.

Billy,
Thanks for the feedback. This will help me rest easy as I too like the growl.
Just didn't want to fry anything. I guess its just my old school thinking of the cammed engines that would idle/run thump-thump-thump, that was so cool.

I've only had my MM for a bit less than a month. It has the SCT XCal2 with Dennis Reinhart tune which has the 4th gear (OD) shift point raised up from 34 MPH to about 45 MPH. I've further raised it to 50 MPH. Since many of the roads I travel in town are 45 MPH speed limits, I llike to travel at about 50 MPH. This way, the tranny just shifts to 4th (OD) at 50 MPH and the RPM drops from about 2200 down to about 1600. I figure this may be part of the reason my mileage is so good. I get about 17 MPG in town and 24-25 on the road. If I see a sprited run coming up I turn the OD off while still in 3rd gear so it doesn't shift to OD at all. That may all change when the 4.10s go in next week, though.

I used to ride with OD off but now with the Lidio tune it runs pefect to me and now I don't bother. OD doesn't seem to kick in untill its the proper time to do so. Now before the tune, oh my God it was horrible with OD kicking in when I'm just petering through a neighborhood.

Good luck with the 4.10's...I too will soon enjoy the experience of having them put in. It's teasing me looking at the 4.10 box in the corner of the garage

If I remember correctly Lidio told me the weak link in this trans can be broken by downshifting hard out of OD into 3rd or 2nd gear. Never put your foot deep into it if you're in over drive. That being said, I would conclude that driving around in drive won't be an issue, except for reduced fuel economy and potentially (slightly?) more wear on our engine.

And finally, please correct me if anyone here knows other wise, but if you're going to go WOT from a stand still, you wouldn't need to turn off the over drive, seeing that you won't be downshifting out of OD if you're running up through the gears, yes?

Thanks,
Jeff

There are people that have grenaded 4R70Ws with the J-mod and other "bulletproof" mods done to the transmission.
