View Full Version : Weird Residue Under Chrome Trim

I'm not sure if the Marauders have the same fugly chrome trim that Ford in its infinite stupid styling wisdom uses on the Crown Vic, but there's a weird residue that is impossible to wash off w/o using rubbing compound. And when I remove it using the compound, you can see that it has etched into the paint. What's worse is that the residue comes back after a few rain storms or snow storms.
Does anyone know is causing this and how to permanently fix it?

You may need to use a light polishing compound like No7 or a 3M product. If that dont help, you may need to "LIGHTLY" Wet Sand, and Glaze. Have you considered seeking help from the dealer since its a product installed on the vehicle thats the cause??

The car is way out of warranty and I can get rid of the residue temporarily using rubbing compound. I'd like to know wtf it is, and why it keeps coming back. Using rubbing compound is a temporary fix and eventually it will wear away the clearcoat causing more problems.

Is it coming back on the paint?? Or is the chrome trim just staining the paint again?? If its the paint, Then the Wet Sand and polish is your only alternative. Do it once and you'll never have to worry about it again. it takes the clearcoat down a notch and it will wipe out the stain.

Maybe it's something in the rain/snow. Acid rain type of thing or like a hard water problem. It's odd that it only happens after rain or snow storm and not after a washing. I've never seen that type of problem before. I guess that if you can't find the cause is, is to try to prevent more damage. Give the car a good wax protectant. Good luck.

If you are sure this is being caused by the bs adhesive FORDMOCO uses, remove the trim and reapply as you see fit. Otherwise it appears that you will need to correct this problem again and again. I have not had this problem yet.

Well, it's etched into the paint and if I rub it out using rubbing compound, it will re-appear at the next rain/snow storm where liquid gets underneath the seal.
Can I safely peel away the chrome trim? What's underneath? This would be the trim running under the sideview mirrors.

The residue appears on the rear doors as well, right under the chrome/rubber trim. It appears to only drip down at certain spots due to the leveling of the vehicle.
I think you're right... it might be the crappy adhesive that's coming apart.

Well to remove the trim in a small area you will need to figure out how it is attached. I am not an expert. To speculate I think that there are one of three things holding it on. 1 Old fords had a rail that you actually slid the trim off. 2. Is is a combo of fasteners and adhesive. 3 or adhesive only, which would surprise me.
I wouldn't try this myself though, unless you are good at bodywork.
I would try to find someone you trust who does bling-bling and/or custom detail work, they should know how to remove and or replace chrome trim.

I know you are out of a Bumper-to-Bumper Mechanical warranty but there still is a CORROSION warranty...
I would take your Marauder back to your dealer after a rain,
show him what is happening and let him figure out what is causing it.
This can alleviate 2 things -
Your paint being damaged and needed CORROSION WARRANTY REPAIR.
Your dealer having the knowledge of what is happening for other customers.

Metro...Go buy a Marauder, then stop back here.
We may have some answers for you, maybe not. Depends on your attiude.

We may have some answers for you, maybe not. Depends on your attiude. translation: you don't have the answers. Many Marauder owners either have Crown Vics or used to own Crown Vics. I thought maybe someone would provide input on something they may have seen in the past. As for my "attiude", I have no idea what it is. I don't own any "attiude", are you going to ask me to buy some before you will respond with your omniscient knowledge? Or wait, maybe a vendor will sell a product that will prevent this residue from forming. I could use that instead of a fuel tank bib, or a rear bumper flap girdle.

I have the same type of "problem" on my '04 (DTR). I also had it on my '88 Marquis around the trim. I think it's chemicals in the water (I'm sure you know how the water is treated for drinking) and it then reacts with the adhesive and breaks it down. I can get it off by just a light hand buffing and then waxing, but it does come back after several washes. On my '88, it was still happening when I sold the car in '04, but never did get past the clear coat and into the paint. But if I let it go for too long, I had some very white drip marks from the trim anywhere from 2 - 8 inches or more, but the buff and wax took care of it. I hope it doesn't affect the Marauder more then that, not that I would wait that long to wash it!
