ExxonMobil is really trying to confuse those owners who like to use Mobil-1. Case in point (and I'm only talking about Mobil-1, NOT their "Clean 5000", "Clean 7000" and "Clean High Milage");
1. They now make Mobil-1 two different ways. (I am NOT talking about weights). They make the "Old" Mobil-1 with SuperSyn and they make the "New" Mobil-1 Extended Performance with Advanced SuperSyn.
2. Noticed that the "New" Mobil-1 Extended Performance 10W-30 does not have the Energy Conserving Starburst on the bottle but the "Old" Mobil-1 10W-30 does. None of the Extended Performance weights have the Starburst
OK, I decided to telephone ExxonMobil to ask questions. 1-800-275-6624.
3. Yes, they still make the "Old" Mobil-1 in addition to the "New" Mobil-1.
4. Yes, the "New" Mobil-1 Extended Performance is not an Energy Conserving oil.
Next, I asked them if these two oils were Class III, Class IV, or Class V Synthetics. Here is the surprise.
They told me that the "Old" Mobil-1 is a Class IV Synthetic and that the "New" Mobil-1 Extended Performance is a Class III Synthetic. (I did not tell them that I know that Class IV Synthetics are PAO's, superior to Class III Synthetics which are oils pumped from the ground, and superrefined or Hydrocracked and also much cheaper to produce than the Class IV Synthetics). I asked again, are you sure that it's not the other way around, but he again said that the "Old" is a Class IV, and the "New" is a Class III.
ExxonMobil is going to shoot themselves in the foot with all these confusing oils.
BTW, Although a Class IV is better than a Class III, it does not mean that a Class V is better than a Class IV. All it means is that a Class V is and Ester/DiEster/PloyOlEster and the Class IV is a PAO.
After many years of AmsOil being a PAO, most of AmsOil oils are still Class IV PAO's but their 7000 mile oil is a Class III Hydrocracked oil.
Changing the oil in my MM tomorrow and will use the "Old" Mobil-1 10W-30. Although I'm not brand loyal, I will only use a Class IV or Class V in my cars.
