View Full Version : Chirping noise from the rear of the car

Ok. This one has me baffled. I regularly hear a kind of chirping noise coming from the rear of the car. It is neither engine related nor transmission. Sounds kind of like a chassis component is loose and moving around slightly. I can usually hear it when I am driving slowly on the freeway. If anyone knows the I-580 thru Livermore, they will understand the SLOW part. Does not come from acceleration nor breaking nor do I hear it over rough roads. I also cannot force the noise by gentle acceleration etc... My guess is a bolt somewhere in the back is loose and I'm hearing metal rubbing against metal. Anyone got any ideas or has anyone heard anything similar?

Sounds like ya got a Hyundai stuck to your undercarriage. That chirping you hear are it's plaintive cries to be set free. :)

I've got a chirp sound coming from the rear of my Marauder also.
It seems to happen when it shifts from 1-2, and the throttle is buried.
Sorry, I had to say it... Lidio's magic is got me grinning bad... :D
could be the trunk, check this post out. . .

Either there is a fasterner(s) loose or might be a u-joint going bad.

I have the same issue. Doesn't happen all the time but when it decides to rattle it does. Chirpy sound... kinda wants to make me look at an exhaust hanger or something.

I have a "chirppy" sound in the rear when I make a right turn up a driveway. It has to be at an angle,, it does not make the sound if the driveway is level.
BTW why do you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway???---Sorry I couldn't resist :stupid:

Chirp sound at low speed- possible u-joint, brake squeal or backing plate rubbing against the rotor. Keep us posted.

Thought it was the spring that holds the parking brake to the chassis but maybe not. It still happens but only during light floaty bumps. When I drive during an autocross I don't hear a peek.
PS. The driveway thing I don't know. The parkway is supposed to mean that the road eventually leads to a park. :D Or so they say.

If I drive on a parkway and park on a driveway, does that mean I can freebase on a freeway? :shake:

Mine was a clicking sound from the left rear, wound up being the parking brake assy. hitting a wheel stud inside the parking brake drum of the rotor.

It's from my a/c clicking on and off. So much for my spatial hearing as I could have sworn it came from the back of the cabin. It does not happen during idle which is why I ruled it out. I was driving down the road today and it was chirping every 30 secs or so and just for grins, I turned off the a/c. No chirping.
Oh well. Thanks for all the helpful and funny comments.

I got the same thing but I would consider it more of a squeak. .Yes, I just noticed a squeak while going around a righthand turn twice in one night last week, but it hasn't done that since then. BTW, you guys are talking about worn U-joints chirping. I never heard of that. As far as I knew, you'll hear a clunking noise once in awhile when the U-joints are bad.

U joints can make a chirping sound when the roller bearings start to go. :(

And if you let them chirp long enough - boy do they start to clunk! Ask me how I know! We need to get a meet going before the sumer is over.
