I was told about 30 miles would do the job.

The performance shop that did mine recommended a break in of 200 miles. I have heard others say 500, so I guess it just depends on who you go with.

There was something mentioned to me about going through a couple of heat cycles. I didn't have that explained in detail though. I just went easy for the suggested 200 miles. . . . well, sort of.

It's probably the longest 200 miles I ever put on my car, but it was well worth it.

My gear installer claims the first heat cycle is the most important. To keep the speed down, no rabbit starts..... get everything up to running temp for about 15 minutes... then shut it down and let it cool down over night.

But.... he also claims 500 miles easy.....:dunno:

^^What he said^^
Just around town for 15 minutes, speeds from 0-50, then shut her down for a little while. And thats another vote for no WOT until 500 miles.

If they are FRPP gears, give them a call and ask. I called them and asked when I had 4.10s installed in my Cobra. There is a break in period. But, I don't remember exactly what they told me to do. So, give them a call.

I had mine done and took it easy for about 15 miles.

Of course it was raining, but I couldn't resist feeling the difference.
No problems at all.

I couldn't get it in because one of my bolts wouldn't come loose unless we yanked it out and had to replace it with a new one. Which I was told would take 3 days to come in the mail so I didn't do it today. I'm very angry right now because they looked at it and said someone messed with it. It has been in the shop before for accident repairs and they we all for the rear. Whoever put in the one bolt we need to get out put too much pressure on it and now it's stripped so if we pull it out it won't go back in. :mad2:

I just had 4.10 gears put in today, too. Great improvement. :burnout:

Since not everyone has an installer next door, here's a question:

What if the installer is about more than 25 miles away? If you should only drive for about 20 minutes, and are not to exceed 50mph, how do you get home? Should you drive for 15-20 minutes on the city streets, find somewhere to kill some time (a mall, restaurant, or whatever), then drive some more?

My installer was 80 miles away. He drove the MM around for about 15 minutes after he installed the gears. Put 8 miles or so on the car. Then I came and got the car the next day and drove it home varying my speeds, and using as many back roads as I could to get home.

Gear break-in. What kind of gear break-in are our members doing when they buy a brand new car?

Are the brand new gears in a brand new car of a superior quality then the brand new gears you buy aftermarket?... and therefore the aftermarket gears require a special treatment that gears in brand new cars do not need?

I have never noticed in an owners manual a section on gear break-in, actually the MM. owners manual has a very small section on break-in, it mentions that there is no special break-in required.

Did I get this wrong???:dunno:

I thought I read somewhere where they break the factory gears in with a heat cycle etc. before they put them in the car..... wasn't that in one of these threads?

I thought I read somewhere where they break the factory gears in with a heat cycle etc. before they put them in the car..... wasn't that in one of these threads?Yes, but it's not the same as being under load. By the time a new car actually gets to the owner has a few miles on it, and has had a chance for most things to seat properly. When you replace any of those things, it's back to square one...

BTW - My CAR break in is to drive like you stole it. Teach the computer what to expect, for thousands of miles to come :burnout:
