View Full Version : A somewhat quick... Oldsmobile??

I ended up sitting at a light, beside an Oldsmobile Aurora... Think nothing of it, right? Probably some older gentlemen, on his way to lawn bowling, right? Wrong. It was a yonger guy, mid thirties, at most. Something told me I needed to accelerate once the light turned green... Perhaps it was the goofy grin on his face ;)
Glad I did. Apparently, the driver beside me also was in a rush, 'cause he pushed down on his pedal quickly, as well. As soon as we started, I knew the exhaust note couldn't have been stock. He kept close, but lost ground at a pretty good clip. By the time I was at the speed limit (~50mph), it was clearly over (3 - 4 car lengths). I shut it down, and just coasted along, until the next light.
There was the goof grin, again, but this time he motioned to pull into a little smoke shop / plaza, up ahead. Nice guy - wanted to chat about the MM. I told him ALL about it  I later found out that the big, unassuming Aurora packs a 4.0L V8. He was a reluctant to say what was done to his car... He mentioned a chip, corsa (sp) exhaust, K&N intake and some "other stuff"...
It would make a decent sleeper, if it was a little quicker :D Oh well, chaulk one up for the good guys...

I think those 4.0 V8's were based off the Northstars ... but don't hold me to it(my interest in Olds faded in the late 80s').
Butt-fugly cars I always thought ... tho there are certainly worse looking cars out there. Sadly enough ... it was probably one of the better - of the last Oldsmobiles ... AHEM ... I mean modern Generic Motors production vehicles. :P

Now you know why Mr. Shelby chose the Aurora V8 to power his Series 1 sports car. I believe this engine is still be used in racing circles under the Chevrolet moniker.

They also made the F1 circuit.

Yes, nice engines. That later Aurora's didn't look as bad as the first gen. I did look at them actually, but the big no-no's are FWD and a heavy car with a smaller V8. Stock they are a fair margin slower than our MM's and alot less you can do with them with off the shelf performance parts.

Yes the 4.0 V8 was a destroked 4.6 Northstar. And the 3.5 V6 in the Intrige was just a Northstar with 2 less cylinders  But yes Shelby used the 4.0 in his Series 1 roadster. Good potintal engine as the IRL was virtually powered by it. Not the F1 cars as I don't remember any Bowtie sponsored teams plus F1 uses V10's at 3.5 L of displacement.

Also GM dropped the ball with the 1st Gen. Aurora as it didn't even have Oldsmobile anywere on the entire car so no one knowed who made the things   I think that had at least a helping hand on why Olds is no more

It was one of the newer ones... Not completely hideous, but not something I'm into, at all. It looked like this one:

Anyone know what one would do, stock? They made 250HP (he said that's what it was rated as stock), and I've gotta believe they weigh a little less than our cars...

Mags rated the last Gen Aurora around 16.5 Stock they weigh about 3800 LBS curb weight might be a little more depending on options IE Moon roof/heated front seats ect. ect.

Things went down hill when the Toronado - Eldorado & Riviera were downsized into lil' lame ass TOY cars in 86' along with the Olds & Buick B-Bodies. Nothing like paying top dollar for those divisions TOP OF THE LINE cars(Toro & Rivi) ... only to end up with something that looked just liked their ENTRY level cars(FWD Calais & Somerset).
Oh ... but we were oh-so privledged to have had the honor of the big overgrown wretched excess JELLYFISH looking Impala/Caprice kicking around for a few more years :puke:.
GM/Oldsmobile should have taken a hint from their own actions in 1988 ... when they made a limited run of the LAST full size RWD Cutlai that year & labeled them Cutlass Supreme Classics. Ya' don't produce such a thing if you really think everyone actually wanted the lame ass FWD H bodies that replaced them.
Oh well done deal ...
Why I keep letting myself get all worked up over this time & time again is beyond me.

Nope how about 1964 1/2 442/1966 W-30 442/1970 W-30 442 with HO445 engine.
Buick had the GS/GSX of the 60's and 70's/and GNX of 1987 only like 541 made that year and that year only.

That doesn't seem to add up, in my mind  3800lb car, 250HP engine should make for a mid 15, shouldn't it? Maybe it's like the high 15's the magazines got out of the Marauder - not quite accurate... This car wasn't going to compete, but he didn't get buried like a 16.5 car, either. Maybe he had more mods into it than he let on?

Gonna have to disagree with you, there. I would definitely like one of these:

Oooooooooooooooooo.
And it's a W30 too.
Now THESE were the kinds of cars that were worthy of the Olds name.

The only olesmoble/buick worth talking about was the Grand NationalDon't forget about these. 455 CI, 360 HP (conservatively) and 512 Foot stomping pounds of torque. Fastest magazine 1/4 mile time in 1970 for a full bodied sedan. 13.38 @ 105 MPH
