View Full Version : Oil pressure guage

Hey guys, figured since I picked up my 'new' MM last week I'd go ahead and pose my first technical question.
I've read on here that the stock oil pressure guage is just a dummy guage/sender and will always show about 60lbs, which I suspicioned after a few days of it never wavering.
My question is, rather than replacing both the guage and sender has anyone tried simply replacing the stock sender with an actual Autometer sender?
Wondering if maybe Ford didn't buy real Autometer guages then dummy up a sender to send the correct voltage for ~60lbs if there was any pressure to avoid the comebacks from John Q Public worrying about his oil pressure dropping at idle in 110* heat with the a/c on.
Just thought if it hadn't been tried I'd order just the sender and give it a shot, potentially saving some folks a couple bucks.
Thanks!
Jon

Excellent question, have wondered the same thing, mine always reads 72lbs.
The gauge will not work if you just replace the sender. If you do a search here or look in the "reviews" section, you can get part #'s and a step by step how to on swapping out the fake gauge for a working gauge. There is even info on how to put the factory gauge face on the replacement autometer gauge to make it look the same as the voltmeter. Hope this helps.

I vaguely recall something about cutting a diode inside the OEM gauge, and changing the sending unit, but not much beyond that. Why not just save your money up, and buy the gauge array that pleases you?

I just thought maybe Ford dummied up a sender that would read ~60psi the whole time rather than have special guages made up just for these cars that would read inaccurate is all.
The money doesn't bother me, replacing a guage that would work fine with a simple sending unit change is what I was trying to avoid since as was mentioned the 'real' guage doesn't look quite like the factory unit.
Thanks for the input guys,
Jon

If you upgrade to the "real" oil pressure gauge also upgrade the voltmeter. The aftermarket gauges are close enough to stock that the average person won't know the difference.

This subject has been researched and info posted here quite some time ago...
If you replace just the sender, the gauge unit will give totally inaccurate readings. Both the sender AND the gauge have to be replaced to make it work properly. The Ford sender is actually just a switch that closes when you have ~6 lbs of oil pressure. The gauge unit is a dummy that is ballasted to read approx 60-70 lbs at all times.
As far as the looks, most people cannot tell the difference during the day...the major difference is at night, as the OEM gauges are backlit while the aftermarket ones use perimeter lighting.

Replace them both, and make sure you use the GREEN cover
on the bulb to match the dash lights.
You won't be disappointed.
This is the easiest mod you'll ever do to your Marauder,
and you'll always know that you have ACCURATE readings
when you look at your new gauges.
Do it for the peace of mind...

Does anyone have to Autometer part number for both gauges handy?

Oil pressure: 4327 Voltmeter: 4391 Both come with everything you need for installation, except for the wiring terminations.
I recommend using ring terminals, as opposed to spade lugs, for protection agains accidental shorts in case one comes loose.

Lose the cig lighter and get a tranny temp gauge too...IMHO.

That's what I did with mine.
There is a power outlet inside the Console storage
if you need it for anything other than smoking...

Been smokin 36 yrs. At the one year mark I'll get rid of the lighter. I've fought it every inch, every minute, of everyday  do the cravings ever stop??? I now chew cocktail straws, which has become another addiction....

Are you all sure the factory guages are fake? I know the voltmeter works because it fluctuates to the beat of the subs in my car when I had the volume up.
Besides, they both start at zero positions and move up when you turn on the car. Am I missing something?

Yes we are all sure the Oil Pressure gauge is fake, do a search this topic The Oil Pressure gauge has been discussed way too many times.

jawz, it's only the oil pressure gauge that's a fake, and yes we're sure. Notice how it always reads the exact same pressure no matter how warm or cool the engine is, and no matter what RPM?
Proper pressure for this motor is approx 100 lbs when started cold, and approx 25 lbs when idling hot. Cruising at 45 MPH reads about 50 lbs...
