View Full Version : Are You Cold Enough?

I attempted to search on "air conditioning" and could find nothing on my question. Are any of you '03 and '04 MM owners as disappointed as I am with the cooling in our cars? On the freeway at 70 mph I can drive 50 miles and never have to reduce fan speed from high while on 'max A/C'. I do get a 40 degree or better reduction when it is 85 degrees outside (gauge in the vent will usually read 45 degrees). My dealer basically told me that's all there is and there ain't no more. I've never had an airconditioned car that would not freeze you out after 10 miles! Surely there are others besides me that have the same complaint. The only time it can freeze me out is when it's raining and 70 degrees or colder outside.

I'm thrilled with the A/C. I can get it to where you can see your breath.

I think it's fantastic.
It really makes having dark leather during 100* days is no big deal.
And I'm totally diggin' that it shuts off at WOT!
It does freeze me out.

A/C works great. My passengers complain about freezing to death in both summer and winter.

I'm not having a having a problem with mine. Currently temps running in the 90's here during the day and keeps car nice and cool. I keep the temp setting between 70-75.

My A/C cools me even when the gauge reads over 101 degrees here in Miami.

Same. I can get in the car in 100*F weather and be shivering in 10 minutes.

The A/C works great! Spits ice cubes out after
3 minutes of cool down. 1979 T-Bird did the same thing.
Gotta Love It! :D

I've had car's with better a/c. The marauder does an ok job as long as the car has not been sitting in 100+ sunshine for a while. Then it struggles. The back seat passangers don't get much a/c at all unless I have it on "floor". Am I missing something here? When it is on vent, the rear gets nothing.

I don't know if this will help in your case but I have noticed that the A/C works a lot harder when the vents are pointed up to the top of the car. Don't ask me why?
I have always pointed them up thinking that because heat rises it is best to put the cool air up near the roof so that it will sink.
The funny thing is that when I point the A/C to the cabin it cools down the car faster and the A/C drops from MAX more quickly.
I don't know if this will help you but, hey, it might be worth a try.
Best,
Dan

I live near Chicago and we've had one of the hottest most humid summers in recent memory. If you are coming to the Marauder from a GM product, no, the A/C is not as powerful but I think GM has the best climate controls in the business and sells them to several European makes.
With all 4 dash vents open I agree with you that it takes seemingly forever on a hot day b4 I can turn the fan speed down. I solved the problem by closing the far right(passenger side) vent and aiming the remaining 3 vents at me. It takes noticably less time behind the wheel now b4 I turn the fan speed down than it did with all 4 vents open.

I keep mine on 70-75* in Automatic mode and have no problems. Both the wife and my daughter complain it gets too cold in the Marauder.

There seems to be a pattern developing here! Some MM's like mine can't get cold enough. Most work fine. I always have my temp on 60 degrees with fan on max and A/C on max, so there's something wrong with mine. Puzzling is the 40 degree temp drop I'm getting that isn't keeping me cool. Two people have told me it's because it's a black car but I'm not buying it.

When I was in the Navy, I had a maintenance officer who, in his office had a 5 ton air conditioner sitting right behind his desk. Now this is on a ship. Not really large compartments. The air con was for HIS office. It was NEVER cold enough for him. Of course not until we were out to sea for a few weeks.
Then he would stop sweating.
Of course in port he would drink like a fish.
Any simularities;)

If I'm not mistaken I do believe the owners manual says for maximun efficiency of the A/C, run between 68* and higher, that running it below 68* will make the compressor work harder. I'll check for sure when my wife gets home.

My consensus is with the bulk of the group. Here in Texas I usually come out to a hot car (100+) and sometimes put the sunshield in the window, but not usually and have the temp set on 76 degrees (auto) and usually within ten minutes I am quite comfortable. I just set it and forget!

Do a search on "A/C" and there are lots of posts. I found the same thing as you >>>> Bluerauder A/C Question (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18904&highlight=A%2FC) back a couple months ago. I had my MM in the shop a couple times .... it seems to be working OK now ... but I don't think the dealer ever found any specific problem. I've got the problem documented now by multiple visits and I plan to watch it very closely through the warranty period. :D

Mine works beautifully too. At 100 degrees out and 100 miles an hour down the hwy and a loaded car full of people, it worked like magic.
Er, theoretically. :o
I don't aim ANY vents at myself. That way I know the passengers have to be cool by the time I am, which takes about 3 minutes.

I've owned many different makes of cars both foreign and domestic, and I've always thought that Ford product's A/C's were the best. And my Marauder has not changed my opinion. I'm extremely hot-natured, and Texas routinely has 95-100+ temps in the summer, but my Marauder never fails to cool me down quickly. But I also use a windshield sunscreen and leave the front windows slightly open. This makes a huge difference in how hot your car gets, and thus how quickly it cools down.

Thanks for all responses which just serve to confirm my car isn't working properly. Now-any ideas why mine doesn't cool properly even though it blows @ 45 degrees? I'm not much up on auto A/C so the only thing can think of is maybe it has a low charge and still blows cold? I purchased it used and have driven 2 summers now. Never gets cold enough when it's 80 or above outside.
Well, if it's still under warranty I suppose you could run down to the dealer. In fact, you might want to do that even if it isn't warranteed.

Thanks, Dan but I already went to my dealer (post # 1). The service writer, well maybe he doesn't know much about A/C. My warranty is extended 3 yr. Bluerauder found me a thread from 2 mo. ago-they talk about incompetance and ignorence about A/C in the auto trade. It is really a 'special' area of auto tech-as autotransmissions are. They are both areas a novice should stay away from. A man has to know his limits (Clint Eastwood's character in a movie). I worked for a Ford dealer for 7 years (way before certification) and I know all about good mechanics and bad mechanics (same as good cops and bad cops-I've met plenty of those also :( ). I didn't even think to looky in my shop manual . I always purchase a shop manual for any car I buy. It usually pays for itself even though they aren't cheap. The other thread Bluerauder referred me/us to (earlier in this thread) has other excellent hints on owner troubleshooting. I have a Sears/Craftsman lazer temperature device I can play with under the hood. I will talk to my Mercury service Mgr. and if he doesn't want the job I have the Ford dealer I worked for for 7 years I can go to for help. P.S. FYI It's a $50 deductible for EACH trip to the dealer no matter how many warranty items they work on.

Mine also doesn't work very well. The speed limit here on US 84 is 75 MPH, Temps lately have been 100-108. On the freeway the A/C only blows slightly cool air, I have also noticed the compressor makes a load chirping noise every 15 seconds. The A/C only gets cold when I drop down to 35-40 MPH. I love the car, but I am heading to Iraq again for 8 months. So i will be looking at the SRT8 charger when i get back.

Mine cools no better or worse than any other nearly new car I have had. We use a sun shield, let windows down for a couple mins if it has been sitting in direct sun. Have to back it down off max fan after a bit.

Black large Marauder, Texas summer, 100+ degree days. And my AC will freeze your knuts off.
If your temp is 45 or so at the vents that should be OK. It sounds like you might have out side
hot air leaking in somewhere. You could try having the car stationary with the engine running
about 1500 RPMS and see if the cabin is cooler. If you notice much of a difference then I would
start looking for an air leak when you're driving down the road. Check your temp at the vents when
driving at 65 MPH or so and see if they are different from when your sitting still idling. If the air
coming out of the vents is warmer when driving then the warmer air is probably coming in through
the AC itself. It takes very little warm air to make a noticeable difference in how cold an AC will
keep a car.

Sounds like the AC system is low on freon.
