View Full Version : T/C Lockup Question

I sent my "Tuner" an E-mail asking for a tune in addition to what he has given me, one that will not lock the T/C until 60 MPH.
Now I thought I understood what I meant. Even talking with Mark Keiser I figured I knew what I was saying. Here is my scenario: I can be in 3rd gear and lean into it and it sounds like it downshifts, but it doesn't go into 2nd, so that must be it "downshifting" from a locked T/C to an unlocked T/C...
right?
Well I get the file back and I can still lean into 3rd and it does the same thing. I don't want it to do that, isn't this preventable?
By saying the words "Don't lock up the T/C until 60 MPH" won't that yield the result I am looking for?
This could be my mistake or his, so I'm looking for clarification. I don't really care if he messed up, he has done great things for me and he is a very busy guy - I'll just bring it to his attention and voila, but I'd rather not send him and E-mail and step on my tongue. Can someone clarify this for me?

I think you should ask for the t/c to lock up in o/d only!!

If you are saying do not lock the TC until 60mph that means the TC remains unlocked until 60mph.
What I think you are feeling is the car coming out of overdrive...... switch the OD off... then try your lean into it thing.
If your TC is unlocked you can gently change your throttle setting and notice a change in RPM but not much of a change in the car. Thus... you gently lean on it and the RPM will go up much quicker than the speedometer needle.
However, when the TC is locked you will notice the RPM climb in direct relation to the speedometer increase.
Hope that babble made sense...

I agree with AzMarauder but he's only partially right...
My Xcal2 came from Alternative Automotive.
It is programmed not to lockup unless it is in OD AND the speed is =>63MPH.
So here is how FORD shifts.
1>2>2+TCC>3>3+TCC>OD>OD+TCC
This is a problem cause the tranny can be in OD+TCC at as little as 35mph.
Here is how it shift with the tune.
1>2>3>OD>+63MPH>OD+TCC.
This provides a better feel, and softer downshifts, with MUCH FIRMER upshifts.
When TCC locks, you can hardly feel it.

Thank you for the replies so far. O/D is locked out until 50 MPH, so at 40 MPH I am not shifting out of O/D and hitting 3rd. I am in 3rd and feel something "Come Loose" and rev a little higher thus giving me acceleration. I'd rather not have that slight "Downshift" and just be able to ease into it.
Pete my pattern is similar to yours.
1>2>3>50MPH>4>60MPH>T/C Lockup
BUT...even at 60 MPH I can still ease into it, with O/D switched off, and still feel that T/C unlock and rev up to give me speed.
So if I can ease into it in 3rd at 40MPH, still feel it unlock, ease into it in 3rd at 60MPH (4th switched off) and still feel it unlock - Was anything changed? For those with the T/C locked at 60+ MPH - when you ease into it does that mean it won't unlock, it'll just keep going without feeling like it shifted down a couple hundred RPMs? Can you describe it for me a little? Is what I'm looking for phrased right?
What I'm looking for is to be in 3rd or 4th and ease into it and just feel the power without the kick-down.

Rider,
What you are looking for is exactly what my 2004 Marauder does.
When I EASE into it, the Tach will rise to about 2500 rpm and hang
while the transmission plays catch up.
I don't have the feeling of anything releasing or downshifting.
You don't say what year your Marauder is in your sig,
but if you have a 2003, you may be feeling the stator in the Torque Converter,
overcoming kinetic resistance, before it starts to spin up.
IIRC, The Torque Converter in the 2004 was made with different bearings
so the spin up takes place with reduced effort.
I would try flushing the tranny and seeing if it is still there.
There is nothing like fresh oil to wash away any varnish buildup
that could be causing something to stick.
Oh, I just looked at your site.
I see you have a 2004 Marauder.
Do us a favor and look at your driver's door tag,
and tell us the transmission code, please.
If you have a U or H, then you have the 4R70W transmission.
If you have an R, then you have the 4R75W transmission.

For "TR" it says "R"
Lets say we start off with a stock tune from the factory, the TCC usually locks in 3rd gear right? You'll notice the RPMs drop a couple hundred. How can I get that NOT to drop until 60 MPH? Because when the T/C is locked, it has to unlock when I ease into it. I know it isn't a gear downshifting. From what I've been told it is the transmisson's T/C unlocking. Am I right? Have I gone mad?

TCC on a stock tune locks in 2, 3 and OD.
TCC is also ELECTRONICALLY controlled so it has to be COMMANDED from your PCM.
It is not hydraulically governed.
So if your TCC is locking, you can see it happening on a scanner.
Got a buddy with a scanning tool ???
This will definitely get your answer.

The Diablosport Predator has a scanner tool that will chart the spark and all that stuff while driving, also clear codes. What kind of scanner are you talking about? We also have this Snap-On Modis Tool (http://buy1.snapon.com/products/diagnostics/modis-system.asp?tool=diagnostics&Item_id=75440&PartNo=EEMS300D12&Price=7699&Desc=&SUB_Cat_ID=1566904&SUB_Cat_NAME=Modis+Modular+Dia gnostic+Information+System&Cat_ID=125627&Cat_NAME=Diagnostic&group_id=17428&group_NAME=MODIS+Modular+Diagn ostic+Information+System&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog&pix=objects%2F45600%2F45505.JP G&email=true) in the garage. I'm probably getting to be a bother, I'll look a little deeper into this and forget about it. It doesn't seem like I can get rid of that "kick-down" when I ease into the gas hard (Not a downshift) Thank you for your time and advice so far, Pete.

Anyone with custom tuning can have their tuner adjust lock up and OD speed.

And this is what I've done. T/C lockup at 60 MPH (Apparantly) and O/D at 50 MPH. I'm just trying to figure out if the tuner actually did the T/C @ 60 MPH trick on this latest tune. I am not experiencing anything different, so if someone could describe what exactly changes I could keep an eye out or bring it to his attention.

The TC does not always 'lock'. You can command partial lockup or slip. This is what some of you have described.

Any scan tool should be able to monitor TCC function.
It is shown as a percentage.
0% for no lockup.
100% for lockup.
In-betweeen is partial to full application.
If you can't get it tuned the way you want, I suggest you talk to either Lidio or Dennis.
Both of them use SuperChips products and may be able to help you.
I don't know if they use DiabloSport products.
