Chroming the case, perhaps?

Yup,.. Jason called it.

I want to send the alt. housing, both intake pieces,.. and maybe some headers here (http://www.performancecoatings.com/headercoatings.html)

Better yet... what years & cars does the MM's alternator fit?? Might be able to get one cheap at a salvage... er..... recycle yard.

Tom: Careful as you proceed here. The coating process requires heat which is not bearing friendly. Ask me how I know.....

I am planning on gutting the alternator and only coating the housing.

I think the case is similar to other ford vehicles. You may be able to get one anywhere...I'm not sure what they use now, but I know the alternators are named for their case design, ie. "2G", "3G", etc. I think the new ones are "4G"s.

My 1990 Mustang had a "2G" from the factory, only 75amp. I upgraded to a 130amp "3G" out of a '95 Mustang. I learned that with the 3G I had to look around becuase they came in different outputs even though they looked the same, 90 amp, 130amp, 170amp, etc.

So anyway, I bet you could find any alt, even if its not the same power level, and have the same case design.

I could be wrong though.

It is a 4G. I believe only the N/A 32V ('01 and older Cobra, Mach1, Marauder) engines use it. The others (2G, 3G, 6G) have different case designs so they won't fit because of mounting hole position differences. The other 4G applications will fit physically but the regulator works totally differently, that is the main reason it has taken so long to get a high output unit offered.

Do you really want a coating which will hold in the heat of the alternator? Why not just chrome it? Or, order a higher output one that is chromed such as one from http://www.pa-performance.com/

I didn't find one for a Marauder exactly,..

hmm,... this is weird,.. I would've thought that we'd share the same alternator as 03-04 Cobras?? here's a pic from that site:

I figured I'd send an alternator housing along with the other things I'm having coated. I think it would be cheaper than buying one chromed already.

If I can find one polished or chromed (with an equivilent or higher amp rating) for under $400 bucks, I'd prob'ly buy it.

Nope, they moved it on the '03-'04 Cobra to make room for the supercharger drive. I believe the picture is a 6G. PA-performance does not list one for the MM, but they told me they could make us one (200A output) for about $600. Not sure if that's chrome or not.

Tom, I pulled my alternator apart to have the case powdercoated. I simply removed the front bearing from the case (it comes out by unscrewing the plate that retains it).
One note of caution....Make sure that you tape off the machined bearing race and the machined sections of the case so that NO powdercoat gets on them.
Powdercoating is THICK and it is a bear to scrape off once it is 'baked' on. It will make it impossible to reassemble if it gets on the machined surfaces.

Mine was a breeze to put back together and has been working great.
